refining revisited

i work at a copper mine in arizona.

normal mining uses a ball mill and pulverizes the ore into powder, then runs through other stuff and eventually it winds up being smelted
into copper.
the newer process is called leeching.
we take the ore, crush it to a smaller size and throw it on a leech field. then we drip a sulfuric based "leech" onto the field and it eats the ore up and pulls the minerals out. after some processes, we electroplate the copper onto some plates, then remove the pure copper and ship it out.

this new process make copper thats so pure, the industry had to create a new standard for it. the copper is now 99.997% pure copper (or something close). the process as a whole take longer, but the yeild is fantastic with very little waste.

how about changing the refining process up to give new options?

select smelted refining for normal, or select leeching and it takes maybe a week to refine, but it yields 40% more?

it would take advanced skills and maybe specialized gear to leech, but once established, it would nothing more than just selecting between the 2.

any non-carebear haters have any thoughts?

if you dont mine or run industry, please hold your comments.

I saw a similar idea elsewhere on the forums, it was about the instant turn around of minerals for ore.

When you take your tonnes of Veldspar into a refinery for processing, they don't process your ore and give back the Tritanium. They calculate how much minerals are in what you brought in and pay out on the spot and refine later to cover what was paid from the stock. We can only assume they use whatever process is the most efficient as time to refine is not the issue.

Now for POS refineries I think you are onto something.
A different refining array that takes longer to produce xx% more from the base ore. More CPU / PG usage on top of it make it a luxury item if you can afford to run it.

+1

Make a module that can "leach" the minerals out of the ore, make it so that only properly trained pilots can activate the module (just like POS guns) and get 40% more minerals. Make module for low sec and below and make it more efficient as the security of the space gets lower.

Not withstanding, just like with refineries it wouldn't matter which security level you are in if you have skills at level 5, so very specialized refiners can emerge to get 100% at the lowest efficiencies.

  1. Should need other chemicals like rocket fuel ( a PI product ) to be used in conjunction to the refinery via a silo.
  2. *This would fit the description of the mining process the original post talks about.

  3. Should have different type of refinery for ore mineral type (not subtype)

    • velspar intensive refining array
    • Gneiss intensive refining array

  4. Skill should not work in stations so miners can have incentive to go to null or low sec.

  5. all refinery skills should have an advanced refinery skill and to achieve this the previous refinery skill should be at level V

  6. example:

veldspar processing V ---> advanced veldspar processing

Gneis processing ---> advanced Gneis processing

Description of skill could be as goes:

    Veldspar processing description

Specialization in Veldspar processing and refining. Allows a skilled refiner to utilize substandard refining facilities at considerably greater efficiency. 5% reduction in Arkonor refining waste per skill level.

    Advanced veldspar Processing:

Advanced specialization of veldspar processing permits the usage of chemicals and player owned facilities to further decrease waste, not usually noticed by the untrained, in the refining process.

I interpret the current act of refining in a station as the miner handing over ore for an equivalent amount of minerals based on the calculations made by some sort of foreman.

Let's not forget that different stations have different refining rates. Base values range from 35% to 50%. Only the 50% will produce a 100% yield with skills and standings.

I would say that the OPs idea is already in play.

However, I also think there should be some changes made to refining, especially in high sec.

I would lower refining yields in high sec. Make 90% an absolute maximum in high sec stations. Allow a 97.5% refine in low sec and null sec. POSs should be able to produce the highest yields. That needs sorting with the POS revamp.

Refining is too quick. I would change it so that you could get say 75% of your personal yield immediately, or you could wait 'X' amount of hours, based on your skills, standings and amount of ore being refined, (by both yourself and others in said station,) to recieve your full yield. low and null stations should also allow a faster turn around, (less bureaucracy, red tape and health and safety regulations...)

Whether these changes would increase mineral values or encourage low and null industry is debatable. But that's my take on it.

i thought more about this while i was driving to texas.

the specific array's would be alittle much according to the original post, but..

we take ore (which has multiple minerals) and specifically extract the copper. the copper pure when it comes out, but everything else is waste. so, if we take ore and concentrate it, then refine for specific type, we would be able to extract the 40% i mentioned (of a single specific ore type).

using a PI type fuel would further bring this to realism because we use a sullfuric acid based "leech". that brings up something else.
instead of actually doing this at a pos, we could do it on a planet. one of our planets could be setup as a "leech field". we manufacture (or import) the acid on a lava planet, bring in the ore, select the script (say mexallon) and hit leech. it takes the ore, brings it to the planet and processes it. for a quick turn around, use a station. but if you live in null sec and have time, you could do this.
net yeild would be 40% (or more) over perfect of a specific type or mineral and the rest would be consumed.

just a thought.

it could actually be done at a station and they would import it, leech it and deliever it to your hangar in 2-3 days, maybe a week. for those who have time...

Have you even read anything that anyone else has written in this thread?

i also interpret that the current system covers this.

some stations are better than others because they have better equipment and ur skills amount to ur knowledge of refining processes. no need for any more than that.

I would support a change that makes POS refining more valuable than station refining and any other reason for peeps to set-up their own bases rather than relying on NPC stations (that cannot be shot at Sad)

not normally in favour of bearsec activities but this seems like a good idea.
