There is no point in confusing customers by offering them competing products that fall in the same niche and an EVE-themed set would compete directly with the Star Wars-themed collector sets. There can be no serious doubt that the latter are a much better choice for Lego.

Come back in 20 years when EVE is as widely known and evokes the same feelings of nostalgia as Star Wars, Batman or Back to the Future do today and Lego might listen.

The design of the Rifter is quite similar to the Star Wars sets, so I think that was one of the factors.
I saw an internal video that showed part of the CUUSOO review process. They were discussing the four models, including the Rifter. While they didn't make a decision, they mentioned being worried about the stability of the model.
I am looking for the video now to see which details I've forgotten, but I obviously can't share it.

They state the the Rifter model is too big and unhandy for children to play with, which I agree to when seeing the model in actual size. I also think it is very likely to break apart if a child actually tried to play with it.

While they also state that the Back to the Future brand is outdated, they still think that the car model is nice and something children will play with regardless if they have seen the movies or not. So the parents buy it for nostalgia and the children get something to play with, win-win.

The modular western town appaears also to have been a hot contender but apparently overlapping with another product line.

EDIT: Looking at the video, I am not too convinced of the "playability" of the DeLorean. The frame appears too fragile and as a parrent you would probably need to help your child reattach the doors and other parts falling off multiple times per day.

I have a feeling it is competing too much with their Star Wars line of spaceships... We care about a lego space ship being a Rifter or a X-wing, but kids don't... And thats why they don't want to spent ressources creating spaceships that will compete with their already existing star wars spaceships.

Rifter was too challenging, so they picked something easier instead. This does not surprise me at all.

The thing is we are internet nerds... who cares if it has too many parts... its not like any of us will actually open the damn box... it will sit on my shelf and collect dust... just like the rest of my toys... they must remaind in mint condition till the end of times!
At the end of the game both the pawn and the Queen go in the same box.

I don't think you get how lego works, you need to open the box to assemble it. otherwise it would be like having one of those pour grids of car/plane/tank parts hung up on your wall and acting proud of it.

Lego Curiosity would make me feel much better.

They should publish the Rifter parts list and assembly instructions. die-hard fans would order what they needed and build it without the kit.

Given the complexity of some of their Star Wars kits ($400 Executor, anyone?) I don't think it was that it was challenging.

Everyone knows what Back to the Future is. Try putting a Rifter on the shelves of Wal-Mart and see how that sells.

I'm just disappointed that the Delorean looks like a pile of crap.
