Some advice needed on Tristan fits for a newbie

Hi,

I'm a relatively new eve player (just a few days) and have been looking at some frigate setups to set myself as a goal. My plan is to be able to fly a frigate well before I move into something more expensive...

I've been looking for some good tristan fits, and most of them seem to recommend going with 2 railguns and 2 launchers, such as this one :

Tristan PVE fit - BattleClinic

Why are people recommending to use launchers, when the ship in-game seems only capable of being fitted with 2 railguns?

On a side note, is anyone able to recommend me a good fit to work towards? These are my criteria:

  • Mostly interested in running security missions / ratting
  • Primary focus is using drones, makes life so much easier :)
  • I intend to get into an assault frig at some point, so any modules requiring skills that an AF will benefit from long term is good

Really open to suggestions on how best to fly a Tristan, snipe from long range? Or get in and orbit fast?

Thanks all

the tristan was changed quite recently, as such most of those battleclinic fits are going to be out of date.

I may not be much of help but if you are going to use the Tristan then make sure your Drones skills are quite decent as it is more of a drone frigate then anything. If you are only going to use turrets then check out the other two frigates that give a bonus to Hybrid.

Thanks, that explains it then :)

Yes all those fittings are now out of date.
Heres the latest info:

So if you want a drone boat go ahead with the Tris.
If not, take your pick...

Also, the npc ai has been changed making the rats deadly to your drones. Check the missions and complexes section of the forum for the endless complaining about it.

Because of the changes to the AI you will now need to watch out for your drones. Keep an eye on their shield and armor and if they are being targeted have them return to the drone bay.

Typically you will be able to save the drone well before it is destroyed. If not then send out another one from the bay and replace the lost drone on the market.

You already needed to watch out for your drones before; they were taking fire pretty often.

First think about roles, then think about fitting for that role.

The Tristan has changed a lot lately - it used to be a gunboat, and now it's a baby Vexor, which is itself a baby Dominix.

The ship's main weapon is a drone bay that can fit five drones. Therefore, for PvE, I'd be considering how to use them effectively.

You can either go in hard and fast and blat them from close range, or you can hang back, plinking things and letting the drones do the work.

As you've said you want lazy mode ratting, we're going for option #2. Im not sure what your exact skills are, so I'll talk themes rather than 'fit A.B, C and D' and then find that, because you dont have the skills I expect, you cant fit C or D without leaving B off.

Slot layout is 3-3-3. A Drone Damage Amplifier in the lows will help them hit harder, and an afterburner will help keep your speed up if things chase you. You might think about a Drone Control Unit in the highs will help your little friends attack from longer range.

You've now got two of each slot free.

You could shield or armour tank this Trissie. Me, I'd use a small armour repairer in the lows, and a small capacitor booster in the mids to keep it running, and then a damage control in the lows. Railguns in the highs and you should be good.

Operationally, you plink something, and once you have its attention, send the drones after it while moving backwards with your afterburner on. If any drones get aggro, recall that drone to your bay until the heat dies down. Sometimes the little buggers will do the wrong things and die on you. It happens, and better them than you.

Never ever ever hesistate to abandon your drones if you need to get out of Dodge.

All good information.

Just a note for our Rookie friend, you're going to want to look for a Drone Link Augmenter rather than a Drone Control Unit. A Drone Link Augmenter extends the control range for your drones. A Drone Control Unit allows you to control an additional drone, but I don't believe they can be fit on anything other than Carriers or Supercarriers due to fitting requirements.

P.S. For the last Mid slot, you could toss in some kind of EWAR (Sensor Dampner would be the Gallente way and might help your longish range kiting aspirations). There are anecdotal reports that using EWAR may keep the rats focused on your ship rather than your drones as well. Other than that, maybe an MWD and do a dual propulsion module fit (that will definitely keep you away from some of the rats). Also, though it isn't something a rookie can usually fit, a tracking computer could help the poor tracking of your railguns.

As mentioned before though, a lot of it depends on your fitting skills.

I looked at the market.I looked at a Drone Control Unit. I went 'nope, thats for a carrier', I looked up a Drone Link Augmentor. I went 'yup, thats it', and made sure the Trissie had enough CPU for a DLU and a DDA.

And then I wrote Drone Control Unit in the post :)

LOL

I just wanted to make sure our Rookie friend wasn't trying to figure out how to daisy-chain 2,143 Tristans together in order to have enough PG to run a single DCU. ;)

Highs
Blasters preferable.

mids
medium shield extender
microwarpdrive
invulnerability field

lows
damage control
Drone damage mod x 2

drones Hobys or warriors.

I dont know what you can fit so just fit what you can use.

This is what you do. Pick up agro start running around with the micro on and stay away from baddies. Once you have agro launch drones and let them do the work.

You can run level two's easy with this fit, used it on an alt.
