The Eurogamer Interview

Hilmar recently gave a huge eurogamer interview. Two things about that:

1) Actions have consequences. I'm not talking about Hilmar here, but about the mob that has been bashing CCP for months now. Not a judgement on my part -- heck, I was part of it myself, for what the NeX was concerned. I'm just a bit shocked, actually, that, holy crap, the voice of the masses can be so damaging! And I'm left to wonder, Do we really want to see EVE destroyed? I, for one, don't. I'm saying maybe it's time to tone it down a bit, as this is no longer merely angry folks throwing tantrums on a forum: the very future of EVE is at stake!

2) Then there's this:

Quote:
Eurogamer: Regarding Incarna, we were expecting to have the other Captain's Quarters by now, along with the first steps towards station Establishments. Is there still a development roadmap for Incarna?

Hilmar Pétursson: We're releasing the racial variants of the Captain's Quarters this year and that's mainly because we had that work completed. It also includes some optimisations and other fixes. I think the community has spoken loud and clear that they want more classical Eve features to come out, and that's the priority for us. Incarna is there, and we might pick it up at some point later down the line, but the voice of the community is quite clear. People want more spaceships, and more flying in space features. That's very much what we are responding to.

Got a weird dual vibe about this. Happy on the one hand, as it's always good to hear CCP listen to its customers, and disappointed on the other. I mean, now we're just stuck with pretty quarters that burn half the folks video cards, and the door to the station remains closed? What was this all good for, then?! I was so hoping to be trading in-station, talking with 3D people, or renting real corp offices. And now all that seems vaporware. It would seem Incarna will go down history as CCP's greatest fail expansion.

Feeling oddly empty inside.

I only read half of your'e post, but that was all i needed.

CCP was sailing the ship we know as eve straight into an Iceberg.

We, the playerbase could see that, and we love this game, we want to keep playing it, not see it die becuase its being driven to its death.

We spoke out - we were ignored, laughed at, and told the road ahead was clear.

We edged closer to the iceberg purely from the no-care, "full of yourself" attitude that the driver was showing.

We stopped merely talking, and started shouting and screaming to get their attention.

The driver woke up from his daze, and saw the iceberg he was sailing directly for, and came to a realisation that he needed to do something - and quickly - to avoid the iceberg, and to prevent the ship from sinking.

Hilmar has done just that. He's avoided hitting the iceberg, and he's headed the ship back out to clear waters.

So - to you OP.

Would you prefer to play space barbies confined to 4 different "style" boxes, for the next two years, while all the other aspects of eve are neglected... the very things 90% of the people whom subscribe to this game play for .... or woudl you like to see the game you subscribe to pay - continued, renewd, bugs of old fixed, old promiced dreams forfilled?

But by looking at you're post - you're a WiS'er. So i realy dont care about you're game enjoyment, you are a minority.

Yes yes, we all get it,
WiS players = Space barbies
FiS players = Bad players who lack vision
It's been beaten to death.

That's the problem right there: this black-or-white thinking! Thanks for underlining it.

I would like for CCP to finish what they start, for once, and not abandon, or half-ass implement, any and all new idea they've got. There's a Latin saying that goes: "Aliquis in omnibus, nullus in singulis." You figure it out (but I'll give you a hint: it's got something to do with being a jack-of-all-trades, thus mastering none of them well).

So its black and white thinking that i summed up, without being specific, as i assume you understood what has transpired within the eve community over the past few months, considering you're thread is directly addressing it....

CCP moved alot of resources away from eve, and towards World of Darkness and Dust 514. Becuase of this, eve was getting neglected. We were still seeing updates for eve - but this was only World of Darkness content, in the fact that eve is being the guineypig through WiS to test the engine. So all this focus on eye-appeasing stuff, was draining the life out of the rest of the game. Tho there is a small niche that seem to only want the WiS content, the majority of eve was sick of feeling the after-effects of their game being neglected.

WiS is not trashed, or discontinued, it is still there, it is still being worked on - they have just re-shuffled their priorities, to focus on what they have, the very reason that players pay them $14.95 per month to play the game.

You're statement about wanting CCP to finish what they start for once - more than applies to the FiS elements in game.

Modular Pos's, Corp/Alliance Logo's on ships, The ability to change Ship Skins, Pos's beign redesigned, Faction warfare getting looked at, Wormholes, Supercap and Subcap balancing regardless - are all promices that we've been given by CCP in the past - which they've started by releasing the content - then just leaving it unfinished, unbalanced, with obvious need for changes and tweaks - which even CCP has stated in the past on the forums.

Now are you beginning to understand why there was such an outcry from the masses? Compared to this one thing that you seem dissapointed about, we can go back over 5 years and pull out two pages worth of things which we've been promiced and yet to see.

We got to a point where the entire community went enough is enough, when a long awaited new content patch contained nothing but WiS, and stuff to sell you for WiS, and no content, fixes, or word of work being done on the other 90% of eve.

So please, dont try to pull the "we just want you to finish what you started" thing and use incarna as the one and only example, when you've got 5 years of example of FiS stuff that they've done the exact same thing too, and by right needs addressing first.

Again, Incarna is not abandoned - its just been put where it belongs on the priority list.

Edit - because you're probably going to post about it i'll mention this too - If the 90% of the playerbase wanted more WiS content, this the whole situation over the last few months would have never transpired. IT was moreso the players allways wanted bugs that have been in game for years, and stuff like Faction Warfare, and Capital balancing to be addressed, CCP knew this, yet decided to do what they wanted- and not what the playerbase wanted. When you are relying on said game as your'e primary income to fuel the production of two other games - you need to keep you're main source of income happy and subscribed. Doing what Hilmar did, and also the internal memo's contributed greatly to players leaving, as it appeard that he was quite happy to use us as walking dollar bills, without care or concern for their flagship product, that is the source of life for his other two ventures. WiS had been promiced for years, the eve community wanted it, yes, we still do, but in its proper form. We accept that its been a sideline project, and is to be released in small stages, with the end goal being able to walk around entire stations, visit bar's hire strippers, etc etc, but this coming into effect at the expense of the rest of the game would have been the death of eve. And im still quite happy that 10% of the subscribers be unhappy that WiS is left as unfinished, and only gets updates in dribs and drabs over a long period of time, as long as the main reason that people play this game is focucused on, the 90% is happy, and will continue to subscribe, which in turn, will pay the way for the rest of you're Incarna features.

Agree with Ops 1st point, as a loud whiner about Incarna i read Mr Petursson's interview and now feel it's time to shut up and give CCP some breathing room. Patience

2nd point by OP , wanting WiS now or soon - good grief , CCP will be busy taking care of more important stuff like fixing Eve. Hilmar said WiS will happen , apparently it's not easy. Wait till Eve gets fixed first seems like a good idea.

It's a good business lesson about leadership, vision and most importantly, management. In some schools, Eve Online is used to teach economics. now, CCP can be used as an example of how to over reach, fail and then pick up the pieces.

So Incarna is a teachable moment and we move on. Lets play Eve now.

I gave you a 'Like'. :) You made a few good points, as it can indeed be argued that Incarna, conversely, was also the start of something new without finishing up on the rest.

And I wasn't angry at CCP for not continuing with Incarna (or having shelved it indefinitely); rather I feel a bit empty inside, as Incarna was not just the fad-du-jour, but was announced and planned for years ago already. And now it seems dead. And that's a shame.

From that quote I don't get your weird feeling, I also left over these issues, biggest issue for me was the way they treated their customers. They seem to have remembered (with a little help) that their customers are important to them, hence I returned 3 days ago.

But back to that quote, I don't see anything sinister with it, they have the other CQs ready or almost ready to add then they might as well add them.

The thing is, we won't know if it's time to lighten up on Hilmar until we see the plans for the SUMMER expansion. In the past he's proven himself a slimy salesman. You'll notice in the interview he still seems completely unable to put himself in his users' shoes. The terminology for that is "sociopath." He's sorry he got caught. Not sorry he's screwed us.

I think you may be a wee too harsh on the guy. Sure, he was opinionated and stubborn, but he also came clean about it in a way I've seen few CEO's do, ever. He also came across much more human to me, instead of just an *******. For the first time, when he made his big apology on the forum recently, I was able to see what motivated him, and why he had such a hard time letting go. He turned his ship around -- in time, I think. He went almost a full 180 degrees in the process, which wasn't really necessary, IMHO. I can just hope that the next months he, and CCP, will find some balance again for the things they want to do with EVE.

As for the interview, I saw nothing sociopathic about it. Only thing that ciould possibly be misconstrued was him saying he didn't like the Fearless newsletter being used against him. But I'm fairly certain he didn't mean the forum community by that. Rather I think he was referring to feeling betrayed for having a company policy of openly being able to discuss anything and everything, and then see that trust taken advantage of, from the inside, by someone who leaked the document to wreak havoc with. At least, that's how I read it.

I don't have an empty feeling, I would call it a sad feeling. Incarna is the expansion I've been waiting for since I started playing over 3 years ago, and just as it is close enough you can almost smell it, it get's postponed, or possibly even cancelled.
"[..] we might pick it up at some point later down the line [..]" is leaving those like me with a lot more uncertainty then we reasonably should have after our beloved expansion was put into limbo.
Now, as I feel the RP community/side of the game has always been one of the most overlooked ones in EVE, this stings just a bit more. And Incarna could have been the thing that would make up for at least some of that.

Re-read the interview... depending on how you interpret the flow of the interview it sounds like he wants to revisit Incarna in the summer expansion.

He says he wants to do incarna, but the players are making him do FiS. He makes it sound like once he's done with the winter expansion, he wants to do an apocrypha sized (full steam) incarna expansion.

I really really hope that interpretation isn't true, because it would mean EVE will die.

Incarna will happen . just not now . thank goodness.

you have to look at what incarna had and i am talking about everything that was shown to the players .

a bare minimal interactive room.
a bare minimal under stock item store.
a kick ass graphics engine that kicked your underperforming pc's ass
promises of awesomeness that fell on ears still waiting to see the awesomeness from those promises of long ago.

and that was pretty much it .

i know a lot of people think there was something after capn q's , but this winter if things would have stayed the course we would have received nebulaes , 3 more capn q's , and maybe (doubtful but just maybe) a loby to stare at each other in . and oh maybe some more nex items.

Thats it though . those who keep bringing up establishments . while i appreciate the great sadness of them being placed on the back burner . I feel they were not going to make it this winter . to lil details and the lack of content in the nex store is what i use to base this opinion on . less they were going to be empty rooms, and honestly we really did not need another empty room .

incarna needs more time and a rethink , the technology is there . they just have to add flavor, content, and keep it inline with the vision of eve.

The issue is CCP took way to long and delivered way to little when it came to WiS/Ambulation/Incarna. Because of this most people are just sick and tired of hearing about it. Not only that but because of the time it took, and the amount of resources that where used, Eve ended up suffering. There are some who where, at one time(myself included) actually looking forward to Ambulation especially after the 08 fanfest, now not so much.

A Apocrypha style expansion makes you QQ? GTFO

Apocrypha was one of the best expansions this game as had in regards to amount of content and quality. If CCP actually did that style of expansions, even by scaling back to 1 expansion a year. Eve would be in much better shape right now.

I heard it is better to take iceberg head on, than to take it with a side of your ship.... or well at least this one ship, that was unsinkable found that out on her first journey... just sayin :)
CQ is not bad per se, it's bad that other things got neglected... and CCP is fixing that apparently.

Another good thing they are doing - telling it loud all over the place, articles, devblogs, forums etc. Players who love eve should be doing the same, tell the story and how it turned, tho I bet alot of us are waiting for winter, since you know... winter is coming :)
