This story got me thinking.

I propose that Auto-Pilot is not a function of the ships computer but rather a function of the ships crew.

While an egger is in control of the helm he can process and adapt to minute fluctuations in a warp field quickly enough to avoid catastrophic impacts when they exit warp. Therefore, he can effectively warp to 0.

On the other hand, for a ship piloted by a traditional crew, the warp process is so fast that they can not attempt to get any closer than the 15 KM that the auto pilot provides.

Just a thought I wanted to share. What do you think?
