Simple question.

I have both an evga gtx 560 and a geforce gt 620

i don't know much about video card suffixes as they seem to be some sort of secret code lol

according to geforce.com specs the 560 has slightly higher gpu speed, a ton more cuda cores and higher memory speed (560 ddr5 vs 620ddr3?). That doesnt seem to make sense to me. Anyone know?

FC, what do?

Simple answer, the GTX560(ti?) is a mid range 500 series card. The GT620 is a low profile 600 series card, mainly designed to handle HD films, basic media and some very very light gaming.

It has always worked like this, this is why it is a bad idea to move from a mid range card to a new generation low end, as your current card most likely outperforms it.

Take a GT240 for example, I owned a 9600GT and was planning to step into the 200 series however at the time the GTX260 was the mid range but out of my budget, the GT240 was not, the specs are almost identical except the GT240 cost £45-50 opposed to the 9600GT coming in at £70-80.

9600GT was one of the many mid range 9 series, GT240 is low end 200 series, the 9 series lowend was the 9300GS i beleive.

I currently own the GTX660 atm, costing only £25 more than a GTX560 and is a step into the mid-high end of the 600 series.

EDIT: For the record, if money is not an option GTX560ti or a Radeon 7850, both best bang for the buck atm, unless the 660ti has crashed to the price of the 560ti(£180). I would not spend any less than £180-200 if you want a gaming card for 2-3 years, it will do you well.

In short; the first numbers determines the series and the second number equals the strength of the card (with exceptions, but stated here for simplicity).

The difference per series with the same strength is usually only 10-20%, making it usually worth to skip a series.

In your case go for the GTX 560, or as stated above the GTX 560 Ti as it faster without having much difference money-wise.

Although keep in mind that "performance" has to do with more than just the videocard. You can buy the fastest videocard you could imagine, but if your CPU / Motherboard and Memory isn't fast enough it will still give crappy performance.

Thanks guys. I have both cards already.

I have a new comp with the 620 and an old comp with the 560. I'm going to pull the power supply and 560 out of my old comp and put it in my new comp.

going from pentium 4 2gb DDR machine to --> i7 8gbDDR3 machine... I will finally be able to run max graphics P
