T1 ships have 3 rig slots
T2 ships have 2 rig slot
T3 ships have 3 rig slots

Looks strange, isn't it? For what reason T2 ships have only 2 slots?
When they was introduced CCP done this to reduce (slghtly) superiority of T2 generation over T1 ( I think so). But now we have T3 cruisers (i am looking forward on T3 BS), and they have 3 rig slosts, so this philisophy does not work.
I guess thst the time has come to the developers will bring 3 slots to all T2 ships in the rebalance programm.

Most T2 ships have special bonuses that compensate the "missing" rig slot ... like resistances bonus (built-in some T2 frigates), role bonuses, etc.

Plus, T2 ships are in a whole other league than T1 ones, another added advantage is not necessary for balance reasons.

T1 Ships are the basic ones, so they have 3. T2 Ships are much more focused in their purpose so they need less rigs to enhance their role. In fact having 3 rigs would allow a bit of "breaking" of their intended use. T3's are actually much more generalized the either the T2 or T1, a generalized ship needs to be easily adaptable. Thus again 3 rigs.

T2's do not have, and never should have, 3 rig slots. As much as I'd enjoy it we don't need it. With 3 rigs I'm sure a Golem could fire Javelins easily 80km, which it does not need.

it's about 2 things:

balance, and the fact that T2 hulls are supposed to be "specialized" hulls, meaning they are focussed into one type of gameplay.
This means that having 3 slot rigs might break the ship somehow in a way that it might start either doing something too well, or it starts doing something that is not supposed to be doing.

Clearly, T3s should have 1 rig slot. When T4s come out, they will have no rig slots. I don't know what will happen when T5s come out, but it scares me.

the reason why T3's have 3 rig slots is, afaik, because they are suppose to be more malleable on roles than T2 ships. a single T3 cruiser can do a myriad of roles, so having 3 rig slots seems to be the right approach.

in "RL" performance, who knows. maybe having just 2 rig slots would be better.

Before i read this i was not concerned about T5.

Now I am.

Its not possible to please all the people all the time, but it sure as hell is possible to Displease all the people, most of the time.

Still, even T2 was planned as highly effective specialized ships, i see no reason why it can be changed.

I wouldn't be surprised if removal of a rig slot is one of the things CCP does in the upcoming t3 cruiser rebalance. That being said, in keeping with their (supposed) role of jack of all trades master of none, they should have three slots (nerfs should happen elsewhere).

before diving too deeply in to the debate of t3 vs t2 rig slots why don't we ask the devs for a graph for t2 ship usage vs t3 usage.

if the t3 ships are being used more than t2, then yes there would be need for changes to the t3 ships to make them inferior to t2, but not totally useless. it is true that t3 are supposed to be easliy modded for a variety of roles, but from personal experience i have seen more t3 ships than t2, which breaks the ideal that t2 are "superior" to the jack of all trades. the t3 ships are infact labeled as "CRUISERS" but they are able to perform on the lvl of battleships which in my opinion is not balanced, most t2 ships can compete with battleships but not to the lvl of t3.

however, with CCP working on Cruisers right now, and the future work on Battlecruisers this coming summer, it may be a long way off till we see work on t2 cruisers. I do agree with most of you that t2 cruisers do not need a 3rd rig slot, but if the t3 ships are being used more, then a buff to t2 cruisers should be done to put the t3 cruisers in their place. Just a thought.

CCP has already stated (I forget where) that they know the T2 ships (cruiser and above mainly) need some love. They do plan on working on them when the T1 line balancing is finished.
