I'm wondering what skills I should start training, and what skills I should be working towards. Any suggestions?

You could start by picking out a T1 frigate that's useful, and learning to be an awesome pilot of it. Tacklers in things like Condors are good, or fighters in Kestrels or Merlins.
Or you can learn Logistics - healer types are always loved - start out by being an awesome fixy person in a Bantam.
Or, learn how to be one of those scary people that probes people down at safe spots so everyone else can blow them up and become an explorer in a Heron.
If you like to annoy people, fly one of those ECM frigates that drives everyone crazy. I
f you love destroyers for some reason, they have a nasty t2 thingy for those. But you'll get blown up a whole lot, so whatever.

But start out and just pick one T1 little ship. Just focus on getting good at flying that one ship. When you've got that down, step your skills up to be able to fly the more advanced version. Buy, like, thirty of them. No faction gear, no meta 4, no tech 2. You've got 30 days to lose all of them.

You're going to want Thermodynamics and Cloaking and Infomorph Psychology too, so make sure to get those early.

Go find out what kind of PvP you like first, then come back with a solid question that can be answered by us.

Also, google is your friend in most cases.

These are some good suggestions. Thank you. I might go the logistics route, so I can be useful while I am still learning the game. Also, I have heard of the stealth bomber, which sounds appealing. Do you know it is still viable? There's so much ancient information out there, that I fear following an out dated guide.

I realize that my question was vague, and that is because I don't know where to start, and google isn't helping me find an over view of what my options are. I wasn't sure if there's a standard set of skills for pvp that every pilot should have. If there is, I haven't found them yet. I assumed that there are several directions one could take, but I also assumed that there was a starting point of basic skills needed for pvp focused combat.

I was hoping that starting this thread would lead to a conversation where some nice people might help me decide which direction to take, after I figure out the basic skills I will need no matter how I specialize. Thanks to Sairi Katelin, this does seem to be the direction my thread is taking. Unfortunately, your input has been useless.

They're as useful as ever. Don't move up to one till you are awesome at flying cheap throwaway ships, is all. Caldari are best for this, because while they're learning to fly Kestrels and Condors they're learning missile skills, so when they go for the bomber they only need to learn how to use torpedos and bombs and the bomber itself.
Oh, and groups need tacklers too, so don't just assume that's useless.

Glad I started a Caldari then. I think I'll work my way up to stealth bomber, and pick up some tackling skills to use in the meantime.

I would work towards a taranis, It's really fun to fly and you learn alot of things while using it. It's cheap too and a good pilot can take out alot of diffrent ships.

The obvious answer would be to train the ship and weapon skills needed for the frig or dessi of your choice then just bang away at the core skills that would help with any ship or role while you practice with your starter ship

Well

There are the core skills that enhance all ships in EVE.

They are related to Capacitor, Powergrid, CPU amounts. Any ship with more of it will do better.

Then there are tanking skills for shield and armor. And even if you are shield tanking, bit of extra armor to do a GTFO escape helps. Other way around too, if an armor tanker can have just an extra bit of shield, it can help a lot.

So, those are always quite good to train.

As for PvP eventually, it really depends what you like.

Do you want to fly small fast ships (frigates) or do you like sluggish big ships (battleships) or something in between.
Do you want to be moving a lot (roaming) or like to be stationary (gate camps).
Do you want to be a low-sec pirate or a SOV nullsec grunt / puppet.
Do you want to shoot other ships or grind boring structures.

Or any of the combinations from above.

PvP is not just PvP. It comes in lots of varieties and with lots of options in EVE.

Cool, a lot of great advise here. The interceptor - interdictor road is really good choice as both of those are direly needed in (null-sec) fleets. And for there: navigation and core skills are crucial.
