in evemon i get a message saying x amount of certificates are claimable, how do i claim them in the game and does anything adverse happen if i don't collect them?

Go to you Character sheet in-game and on the left it says Certificates, click this.
On the next screen click Certificate Planner and on this new pop-up at the bottom left it says "Claim all available Certificates".

All these do are show that you have the skills required to do certain things. You can use them as a very basic guideline for what you need to use a ship effectively but its always worth asking round to get a better picture!

Don't follow it blindly they are not 100% correct.
Also look up the 'Hull Tanking' certificate for lolz Lol

The description is funny, but it is actually a very good certificate!

To answer your questions Chill:

1. You'll find the certification section on your character sheet. Top button on the neocomm, third button down on the page that appears.

2. Certificates do nothing, they are there as a guide, and as an achievement system of sorts. You can publicly display what certificates you have. You should not do this. Any information you give your opponent is information he can use against you.

Or rather, be careful about which certificates you display; they're useful for corps to quickly evaluate a potential recruit (instead of having to wade through an endless skill list, they can glance over your certificates).

I leave most of my combat-related skills to non-visible, but the other ones (Mehcanic and the like) I don't really mind showing off, because they generally don't show anything more useful than 'Can use rigs' and 'can shoot things' and 'ship is hopelessly overpowered' :).

I can't get rid of my darn signature!  Oh, wait....

I was speaking with a CCP friend earlier tonight, and they said Certificates were one of the best ideas added to the game Big smile

If you want to do something in EVE, there is no doubt a certificate for it. Training the skills for said certificate will help improve your skills at whatever it is you decide to train for.

Take for instance Logistics Cheif, it requires;
Energy Emission Systems, (used by Guardians, and Basilisks)
Shield Emission Systems, (used by Basilisks, and Scimitars) and
Remote Armor Repair Systems (used by Guardians, and Oneiros)

It pretty much sets you up with all the remote armor/energy/shield repair skills you need to be a well-rounded Logisitics ship pilot.

Its kind of a shame it doesn't require the long range targeting, cap recharge, scan resolution and speed skills that a good logistics pilot also needs.

For the single best concept ever added to the game, I'd have to say the 24 hour skill queue, in space fitting window and ship model viewer all trump it.
