Please tell me I'm not the only one who thinks we need to be able to have full customization of our ships' appearance? I.e. colors, patterns, Corp/Alliance logos, little bits of tech for flair. Cause i really want to paint my Geddon' black and purple. We could set it up so that artist players can render a design, clear through CCP, and sell it on the market and make a profit. you'd have to buy all of the designs, logo sizes, positions, special colors, and such off the market (Save for a few starters). Maybe have a skill set associated with this? You could also add little visual flairs, like pirates and mercs could use a skin that adds little DIY bulkheads and scorched off paint. and then more casual players could have VIP, party cruise, and other kinds of mods to their ships. perhaps have seasonal stuff, like a santa's sleigh and a flying dutchman.Idea

Oh look, this thread again.

Maybe sometimes in the future. CCP is focusing on the Core, and the Ship Balancing first, and has put most of the other projects on hold.

besides that, people would need to stop using WinXP to really get a good graphical upgrade.

It will never be fully customizable because of the TTD (time to dicks) ratio.
They are already experimenting with corporate branded paint jobs. And they want corp/alliance logos on ships as well. That's about all we can hope for.

I wanna own my acid pink rifter!!!!!!!!LolCoolTwisted

Only kidding, I couldn't bare to do that to my poor baby!

I couldn't see this taking off. The server would be constantly downloading and uploading each players customizations for everyone to see. this would cause some mischief for the programmers

If they set up the system right it'll be no different than T2 or faction ship skin variations.

It would really only be a problem for the large fleet battles this game has. Any other game allows customization and can handle a couple hundred people on screen at once.

Another way blob warfare is holding this game back.

You have the art assets on your machine. The current ship skins are under their own ship entity, just a skin value over a previous hull. Its just another hull in the fight and the server just has to tell you what it should look like. What art asset to use likely isn't much of a blip on server traffic compared to loading yet another player, his skill, in yet another object in space, with its own set of mods, bonused by who, debuffed by what, with what speed, what heading, what flags, and so on.

New skins is just a client load. And with any fleet flight, you should have them all at minimal setting anyway.
They really need to create an adaptive graphics setting. So you can set a threshold of maxim ships on grid before dumping your settings to minimal.

Those basic technologies a-la vehicle/weapon/troops camo in Planetside 2 - they don't belong to cold harsh EVE universe of outdated programming code.

Seriously - something is very wrong with EVE. Even Ultima Online had dyes 15 years ago. However I suspect it's done to prevent emotional links between players and their ships: for some people it's much more difficult to lose pink Rattlesnake with pony decals instead of colorless/soulless tinfoil can. Meaning dye and decals must be indestructible or dirty cheap. Otherwise players won't like to risk their emotionally linked ships - and it's bad for economy.

Uhm, it would never be full textures. I would be adding in game assets to places controlled by the art folks and last stage rendering shader stuff again limited by the art folks.

I would NOT cause lag. I might also be restricted to be viewed by clients using highest level graphics settings.

Individual player ship colours and patterns would be catastrophic for this game - the RP feel that this game maintains would be ruined by fleets of pink banana boats. With that said, I would agree that having a simple corp/alliance logo on the side of each ship would be a nice addition.

I disagree

People could enhance their RP experience by flying with colors that show their associations with certain groups or factions. Imagine a RP blood raider group invading amarr with a bunch of ships actually painted like blood raiders without having to all be flying cruors or ashimmus or bhaalgorns. :D

You're right, a pink Dominix would totally ruin the immersion of serious internet spaceships, where the hue and cry of "Umadbro?" and mom-jokes are heard daily.

I don't judge people by their race, religion, color, size, age, gender, or ethnicity. I judge them by their grammar, spelling, syntax, punctuation, clarity of expression, and logical consistency.

I'm good with that, if we can get that I'm good, I'd still like hats, like officer caps... but priorities afterall!

This is what ships look like in EVE: [ ]

Have pink all you want, don't bother me.

There's more lag added from allowing tattoos on portraits than from the ability to change the ship color.

Of course, they'll lose all the prestige of the "special edition ships" being just repainted vanilla.
