Add drones that you can send through a stargate or w-hole to get a peek on the other side. A brief sensor scan for maybe 50k range?

Drone would have limited life and the only way to recover it would be to jump through and pick it up.

Special drone skills would be needed, of course.

Been suggested a few times. I think this would be better served by a probe than a drone.
