Three articles that will guide you through the process of skilling for your first destroyer and helping you prioritize the support skills you'll be training.

Why do I want to fly a destroyer, though?

Why would you not want too? It's an excellent PvP ship, especially for newbros in fleets.

Never skill straight into large ships. Which is the point of the tutorials. Work slowly towards larger hulls, spend time skilling support skills, etc.

Yeah I know, I fly frigates. Why should I go for a destroyer? What is a destroyer going to do in a fleet that is more valuable than a tackler, frigate ewar, frigate logi, etc?

A. A helluva lot more damage and alpha.

B. Basic fleet destroyers also act as tackle. (They don't replace fast tackle, but then newbies don't have the skills to replace experienced fast tacklers.)

A fleet of Thrashers, for instance, over a fleet of frigates.

The main disadvantage of destroyers, especially for newbies, is that they tend to get primaried. In a mixed fleet of frigates, destroyers and cruisers, it's the destroyers that get killed first, due to their high damage output and low tank. That can be quite demoralizing for a newbie especially if they re-ship to another destroyer which just gets killed before they can even lock anything.

Yes if everyone is in a Thrasher then everyone's in the same boat and the primary is more random. But in a mixed fleet, the Thrashers are always first to die.

I would say a beginner in a fleet op should go for either a tackle frigate (Slasher, Condor etc) or something that is not likely to be primary, such as a Punisher.

Perhaps. Fweddit though has a free Thrasher program for newbros. So there is nothing demoralizing for them. Plus, fleets with newbros tend to have 20+ Thrashers, so no one destroyer is being singled out.

Exactly....

Are you Fweddit?

Do you think eveybody has that?

And keep getting killed over and over is demoralizing, no matter if they are free.

Nothing is fun about dying without being able to shoot anything in the meanwhile.

I feel sorry for your experiences in this game.

And a group of these thrashers can rip apart other fleets. I've seen it.

Getting blown up as soon as you arrive at a fight is demoralizing even if you didn't have to pay for the ship. It's boring and frustrating and no fun. If you're an old vet then you can HTFU, but if you're a newbro it's just going to make you think PVP is rubbish. IMO.

Yes sure if there's 20 other thrashers then fine. But if there's only 3 of you, 5 frigs and 5 cruisers, you can pretty much guarantee you're toast.

Destroyers are excellent ships, many of which are able to stand toe to toe against Assault frigates.

Like all ships, there is a good time to use them, and a less ideal time... If you are on a roaming gang with lots of cruisers and bigger... a frigate is often preferable because they lock faster and are generally more survivable. In small gangs, where extra dps is needed, the destroyer is an excellent choice. In FW, especially for small plexes, destroyers are very much preferred over frigates...

Most people underestimate destroyers.... other's recognize their potential and primary them....

I don't underestimate destroyers - I just don't think they're the single ship to focus on skilling for. That's not unlike saying "We'll teach you how to fly - here's a guide of how to get into a logistics cruiser!" "But the people i'm running with don't use logistics in their tactics." "Didn't you hear me? LOGISTICS CRUISER!"

With the exception of the Destroyers skillbook (worth training to 5 now before it changes to racial skills) you will find that all of the skills you've trained for frigates are applicable to destroyers.

They're not my favourite ship now but they're decent dps at a very cheap price.

The Talwar looks like it might persuade you of the fun that can be had Blink
