I have a 2012 27" imac 2.7GHz Core i5 running 10.7.5.

I've tried all sorts of button and functionality and all seems to work reasonably well. The only significant issue I found was that the launcher launched with a window size that was small. With screen resolution on a 27" monitor at 2560 x 1440 it was much too small. The little green expand button was non-functional. In addition, I was unable to grab the bottom right of the window and expand that way. Tried minimizing and maximizing from the dock and still no better. Perhaps you've already heard this one before, I must confess I haven't read through all the posts, but it's very annoying to have to scroll left and right, up and down in the launcher. Makes the functionality of all these links kind of pointless, I'd just push play every time.

thanks,

Keep up the good work.

I understand your frustration, but as I've said to others, the ability to resize isn't a concern of mine, since the final Launcher won't be showing eveonline.com, but a custom Launcher landing page, designed for the space available.

Very interesting!

Atropos, I know you said you wouldn't be serving EVEOnline.com, but I thought I'd chime in with one nit-pick—downloads seem to be broken.

Trying to download wallpapers or books through the launcher-served website results in content served, not headers.

Does this mean the Python patcher might be fixed soon?

It's probably because the downloads are being served via the browser, and the EVE Launcher isn't doing anything with the callbacks. As for:

Downloaded and ran the Mac launcher v1.503 on 12/13/12, noticed the utter lack of anything in the Eve Online menu, website definitely too big for the fixed size of the launcher window, but it runs and presents HTML and otherwise looks sharp at first pass. This is on Mac OS X 10.7.5 on a late 2011 MBP with 2.4 GHz i7 and 16 GB RAM.

I'll take anything you would care to offer.

Here are just a bunch of random ideas that may be easier to implement. Some have been stated before over past months and years, but I figured I would say them anyway. Please forgive the wall of text.

Smaller Additions:

  • Top and new bounties. This would be a nice integration, considering the new bounty system that you just added.
  • Recent Sov and FW changes. Perhaps include a link to view an embedded WebGL map.
  • Market prices (not recent trades), e.g. Tritainium or PLEX, or market indices, e.g. Minerals, neatly displayed on the launcher's main screen. Not necessarily in a ticker though. Maybe a little "green up arrow" or "red down arrow" to mimic stock market formats. Perhaps also allow for this to be customized.
  • Links to download or run installed community tools, e.g. EVEMon (for Windows), PyFa/EFT, and EVE Mentat. Allow this list to be customized. Streamline the download -> install -> run -> uninstall process, if possible.
  • Links to community websites, e.g. eve-central and Dotlan. Allow this list to be customized.
  • Have newly downloaded clients advertise "new player friendly" corporations and alliances. This should go away after a few weeks of being installed.
  • Ability to "minimize" the launcher to the lower right system tray (Windows) or the upper right system tray (MacOSX) with a context menu providing some of the launcher's functionality.
  • Spreadsheet management tools (half joking).

Here's another list of some random ideas that will likely take longer to implement.

Larger Additions:

  • Move login to launcher, as said before, but somehow you'll need to keep the beautiful login screen graphics + music; that's a part of EVE Online in my mind.
  • As others have mentioned, make the test servers easier to manage via the launcher, as well as multiboxing.
  • Integrate EVE Gate.
  • Develop your own skill planner (possibly through EVE Gate) and somehow reference it or integrate it into the launcher.
  • Develop your own fitting tool (possibly through EVE Gate) and somehow reference it or integrate it into the launcher.
  • EVE Voice integration, instead of being embedded in the client. Ensure that you support the functionality found in Mumble and TeamSpeak. I believe this has been discussed before.
  • Ability to "minimize" the launcher into a Neocom-like object for your desktop, emulating the game's Neocom's functionality. Basically, let me use the Neocom outside of EVE, with its mail, market, research, fittings, chat, voice, and of course calculator. This probably is not as useful as the system tray minimization, but it would be kind of cool to see someday.

The "minimization" suggestions assume that you are trying to make the launcher something that is always running in the background. This seems to be the approach that you are moving toward, especially considering your recent posts. This is a good thing in my opinion, at least once the launcher gets more features added to it so that it's useful. At some point, you will reach a critical mass of features that you'll need to rename the "launcher" to something more appropriate like "Neocom."

I personally think the Launcher has great detail and doesn't look i'm i'm playing a Computer game from the 90's, ty for that. Secondly, all the links seem to be fully functional and I have yet to have a problem. Keep it up CCP, I love you. And i love Mac.

I kept getting lock ups with the media window especially in the Sandbox area when viewing pictures. It would not close and trying to close the application from that point required me to force quit.

Aside from that it seems okay.

Downloaded just now (16:07 +11:00, Australian Eastern Daylight Savings Time). Safari automatically unzipped the application, it looks just as I'd expect: EVE Online icon, "EVE Online.app" folder contains a "Contents" folder and "EVE Online-1.503.macosx-10_3-fat".

Right-click, select Open, Finder complains that the application is damaged.

Downloading again to see if it was a problem on my end. My system is an 11" MacBook Air, late 2010. Mac OS X version is 10.8.2.

The MD5 matches what I have on the Mac that I built and tested it on. You're running the root EVE Online.app?

Yup, just double-clicking from the Inbox where it was downloaded to (~/Desktop/Inbox).

Now I've downloaded to my 17" iMac (late 2006, 2GHz Core 2 Duo), Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63) and the launcher is starting just fine.

Now I've copied across the version from my 17" iMac to the 11" MacBook Air and it's working fine.

Bizarre.

I wonder if there is a difference in the unzip utility between 10.7.5 and 10.8.2?

Same base, same options, but different compilers?

Manually unzipping the manually downloaded archive using the differently compiled 'unzip' tools results in working applications on both systems. So somewhere along the line, downloading & unpacking with Safari on the MBA is causing the issue.

The MBA is running Safari 6.0.2 (8536.26.17)
The iMac is running Safari 6.0.2 (7536.26.17)

Finally, this might be of interest ('working' is the one that runs, the other version is the one that Mac OS X declares to be broken):

Further to my previous work, I snagged a copy of the file that Safari was downloading:

10:06 ~inbox ➤ ln "EVE Online-1.503.macosx-10_3-fat.zip.download/EVE Online-1.503.macosx-10_3-fat.zip" "EVE Online-1.503.macosx-10_3-fat.zip.mine"

This way I had a copy of the file after Safari had finished the download, unpacked the file and deleted the stuff it downloaded (which is fine for folks who don't want cluttered Downloads folders, but not fine for people like me).

The MD5 sum of that file is the same as the manually downloaded file, which leads me to think that the process of unpacking the download is the broken bit.

So I did the obvious thing and double-clicked the "EVE Online…-fat.zip" file. It opened by default using "Archive Utility", and the resulting "EVE Online.app" is broken. Unpack the archive manually using unzip, the resulting "EVE Online.app" is functional. Opening Archive Utility and unpacking the ZIP achieves the same result as simply double-clicking the archive (i.e.: broken EVE Online.app).

So what is causing Archive Utility to hiccup on the ZIP file?

Update:

Taking the working EVE Online.app and creating a ZIP archive of it using Archive Utility, then unpacking that archive, will result in a working EVE Online.app.

Taking the working EVE Online.app and creating a ZIP archive using the command line zip utility, then unpacking that archive using Archive Utility will result in a working EVE Online.app:

10:35 ~inbox ➤ uname -a
Darwin Lancelot.local 12.2.0 Darwin Kernel Version 12.2.0: Sat Aug 25 00:48:52 PDT 2012; root:xnu-2050.18.24~1/RELEASE_X86_64 x86_64
10:35 ~inbox ➤ zip -r eveonline_manual.zip EVE\ Online.app
10:36 ~inbox ➤ open eveonline_manual.zip
10:35 ~inbox ➤ open EVE\ Online.app

NB: all the above is on the 11" MacBook Air w/Mountain Lion 10.8.2

How is CCP packaging the EVE Online.app into the ZIP archive in the first place? Are you using the Apple-supplied tools on a Mac, or is the packaging of the EVE Online.app done on some other machine and/or using different tools?

The zip package is made using the zipfile module in Python. I can unpack it fine on the 10.7 machine I've been developing on. Archive Utility reports that it's version 10.7 (5.8)

What Python version? I'll see if I can find a trivial case to replicate the problem on my 10.8 machine. It's odd that only a few files are being skipped :\

edit: I'm keen to sort this one out since I'll be replacing my desk full of computers from 2006-2010 with a 27" iMac in January. That will be running 10.8, just like my MBA.

We're using Python 2.7. What I would also like to know is why this is only presenting on your Mac. Everyone else in the thread has been able to use the zip without problem, which makes your case very strange indeed. Thanks for doing this indepth digging around; it's appreciated Smile
