Recently heard a report that the Chinese government in some area is requiring registration of bladed devices (knives, axes, machetes, etc) because nutjobs there have been using them in violent attacks more and more in the last year or so.

Whack jobs will kill you with a spork if that's all they have access to. It ain't about guns, and it ain't about vidya games.

Who cares what CNN say?

Diverting focus from real problem was always nice tactic .As sad that case is , they will blame all they can so they can manage to shift focus from real problem that is so clear.

People that are sick are not to blame cause they can buy guns, who is selling them guns is to blame.Since every government will try to blame what ever they can instead of taking blame as they should, they will blame games, people that are sick and all kinds of things.

CNN is cesspit of journalism and will stay that way,so no one who have at least small amount of brain ,care what they say.

Stricter Gun Laws and a more "in-depth look" at "violent" video games sure is **** not going to stop someone from using guns.

Take a look at Britain. In the year Apr 2010 to Mar 2011 there were 11,227 recorded offences involving firearms.

and yet we've still, as far as i can remember, never had a school massacre in recent years. also "involving firearms" is misleading, not to mention without a "per capita" comparison your numbers mean absolutely nothing to anyone.

How's them subways holding up with those bombs, anyway?

considering not a single mishap happened during the olympics when the underground saw a rather high volume of people; i'd say pretty well to be honest.

Its quite possible that video games can condition a person. Conditioning can make it easier for someone to do an act relatively foreign to them. It can also make things foreign seem more real. I'd say the conditioning only lasts for a few days but more gradual changes in perspective can last much longer if you start to believe that the ideas running through our head are our own.

In response to OP, I don't think this is a very violent game though you definitely can feel violated when caught by surprise. The conditioning I undergo in eve is more of guile than violence imo. Eve's about setting things up and being clever and getting away with it with a disproportionately mild consequence. The victim is upside down with usually the heavier consequence as karma for not beings as clever, cautious or considerate of external conditions and erroneous assumptions.

Now real violence has a sexual component EVE lacks. I would call it penetration and release. It has real world analogies that scale into what we call violence. At its most basic level our will has to overcome the threat of pain with action. On a daily basis we penetrate through this imaginary barrier to perform life's unpleasant tasks. When we accomplish something, we have penetrated this barrier. After we penetrate we are psychologically released from the apprehension. Sex likewise is penetration and release being mostly males we are the penetration of course. The male release is rather small and short lived. Something strange goes on with a woman though. The release is often much stronger and long lasting. Lets move past sex into video violence. We have the bullet and its penetration and then the release from threat. What video games allow us though is much more. At this point I'd like to postulate that fps players are transgendered and pursuing a female release. Postulating aside, We can take an RPG and actually watch messy explosive release. Whats cool is that sexual responses have conditioned us to feel an endorphin rush on release. penetrate, release, endorphin, repeat for hours a day , often for seven days a week. We associate through the endorphin rush, firing a rpg or shotgun indirectly with sex.

Eves frequency of endorphin rush is nothing like the violent constant conditioning in other games. We all know the grinds a drag. Our endorphin dose gets strong associations but not with penetration. We associate the endorphin with work and planning and social interaction. All and all, pretty socially redeeming.

Hate to say it, but... there has to be some effect of violent video games on children. There's already evidence that fast paced and flashy TV shows and computer apps/games tend to screw up toddlers to a degree. However, I'll wait for expert opinions first though. Video games are relatively new and thus not heavily studied.

Hell, we put Disney's Pinocchio on the DVD player for our two year to watch and within five minutes we turned it off due to the level of violence... Straight That was a bit of an eye-opener.

As for Mr. Lanza, I would put the blame on mental issues before I would even consider violent video games as a potential cause.

Irrespective of whether, in anyone's opinion, EvE is violent, semi-violent, or nonviolent, in the USA, the US Supreme Court has ruled that it is unconstitutional to bar children from buying or renting violent video games, saying government doesn't have the authority to "restrict the ideas to which children can be exposed." So even if the dirty pvp'ers touched you in a bad place, EvE is in no danger of censorship here. It would take years for the SCOTUS to reverse itself on its own 7-2 ruling.

"Like the protected books, plays, and movies that preceded them, video games communicate ideas--and even social messages--through many familiar literary devices (such as characters, dialogue, plot, and music) and through features distinctive to the medium (such as the player's interaction with the virtual world). That suffices to confer First Amendment protection."
--Antonin Scalia, writing for the 7-2 majority, Brown v. Entertainment Merchants Association (2011)

I'm actually surprised this topic isn't locked yet, so I thought I'd contribute btl. It's a pretty interesting debate. Parents do have the authority to restrict pornography from children, also protected by free speech laws, but not violence. And to be fair, here's a quote that sums up the dissent:

"What sense does it make to forbid selling to a 13-year-old boy a magazine with an image of a nude woman, while protecting the sale to that 13-year-old of an interactive video game in which he actively, but virtually, binds and gags the woman, then tortures and kills her? What kind of First Amendment would permit the government to protect children by restricting sales of that extremely violent video game only when the woman — bound, gagged, tortured and killed — is also topless?"

--Justice Stephen Breyer, Brown v. Entertainment Merchants Association (2011)

Sorry, but to blame video games for such a horrid act is obscene. There is no other words or fashion to describe it.

This game offers a definite avenue to cyberbully another player, or group of players, but violent? Does watching red x's vanish off a spreadsheet count?

one should ask first what is the definition of a violent video game , 99%of all games are about winning and competrng

Problem is not video games or even gun control real problem is that people who are for one reason or the other are mentally unstabble/ or mentally ill go undetected

how sad this sounds , no matter how tight guncontrol is or how good we try to secure public places this will happen again in the future

I do not agree with what you are saying , but i will defend to the death your right to say it...... Voltaire
