I'm assuming you are a marine since you are deploying for a measly 5 moths. So if you are a marine you will have internet if you are on any soil at this point. Buy a cheap laptop and connect wireless. The internet sucks over there but Eve is very good about running on crappy internet.

I deployed in 06-08 and 09-10 and eve though laggy worked fine on wireless. Just train long skills during the time and look at it like a blessing. You will have all sorts of goodies when you come back. Here is a tip for you, buddy up with whatever commo unit is in the area, chances our one of use nerds are already playing Eve and would be more than glad to let you set your training skills :P.

If your navy and on a boat then I have no clue what the internet is like. Also why not tell your wife about a mere 150 dollars a month? She will be receiving your combat pay and no tax pay every month extra while you are gone a 150 dollars is nothing in that context.

I understand why CCP don't want ghost training anymore where you could complete a skill while your account was inactive. However, I don't really see why they don't allow infinite skill queue.

As a future merchant navy officer, I'll spent something like 7 months a year at sea starting next year, so such a feature would really come handy for people like me. I'm not complaining though since it's my understanding it used to be that people had to put alarm clock up in order to update their skill queue...

OP - Just have your wife change your skills for you.

She will be paying the bill for them while your gone so the least you could do is give her access to them.
Have her put on long training items so she only has to log in every 30 days or so.

I am some what shocked and disturbed that something as simple as this has to be posted on the forum.

Doesn't matter, Account sharing is against the EULA, so if you have your wife do it, you could be banned.....Cool

I am currently in northern Afghanistan and have been to the east a few times and basically all of the FOBs COPs and bases I have been on all had some sort of internet access that was enough to log in and change skills. When patch day hits I make sure to have a 15+day skill training because it might take that long to update, but so far I have been training pretty constantly here all year. Just make sure you have two separate clients so that if one gets fubar during patching you can restore it quicker.

Also, if you are going somewhere that is without internet, you can look up satellite internet companies and buy a dish. It is a little on the expensive side but if you go in with 10 or so people it will still provide decent speeds for all of you and cost maybe somewhere around $70-$100 per month per person. Which seems to be the going rate on satellite. And if by chance you are the only one on it at zero dark thirty playing EVE you might even be able to undock and go kill some people.

When I was on Deployment most FOB's had meager internet services, enough to log in and set a new lvl 5 skill. My one big issue was when Incarna (it was a massive expansion) was released. I tried to update and I swear the internet connection had a stroke and died everytime. Fortunately I had a buddy that sent me a copy of the game 2 months later on a flash drive. I salute you for your time and effort and wish you a safe deployment.

You can't handle the truth.

@OP : Yes, a long shot ... very too long shot. Advices about talking to your wife are spot on. Be brave and do it, don't be a pussy.

Leaves you with 2 options, find a 5 months skill to train or don't train for 5 months. Unless you have internet access when you get deployed, even if only once in a while. You can use any smartphone, tablet pc, netbook or laptop to make a vnc connection, to your pc at home and change you skills yourself. It would probably require that your wife makes sure the pc is turned on at the time.

Be aware that firewall rules can be an issue, and i would advice you to use a device able to run windows and use the vpn software hamachi, to create a secure connection. The advantage of using hamachi is that it enables you to create a connection, even if both hosts are firewalled.

I definitely expect CCP to enable us to change skilltraining via smartphone apps. It is within the game's logical progression. But when it becomes available is anyone's guess.

Don't count on it. That would mean exposing an API for changing stuff in game, which just screams "AUTOMATE ME, PLEASE!"

Next thing you know people are running character farms via automated, perfected skill training bots that don't even have to log on (and thus avoid any form of bot detection).

This is likely one of the main reasons the current EVE API features solely read-only access to stuff in Eve. There is nothing you can do via the API to actually effect a change in game.

I love how everyone seems to "know" that military service members have access to internet service capable of handling eve wherever it is they deploy to. The truth is, not every deployable location will have internet access. Not every location with internet access will allow you to log into Eve. Many remote locations struggle to keep the access available for basic nonsecure connections so we can communicate with our loved ones. And if that service person happens to be attached to a naval vessel, forget having access to eve until a port call.

CCP should add an option to EVE gate that allows changing skills. EVE gate is browser based connection to your account but currently you can only view your skills not change them. I just tried it and it allows to change my bio but not skills.

To avoid EULA hazzle you could "sell" you chars to someone trusted (remove all assets and roles from these chars anyways) and then when you return home you could "buy" them back. I don't know if selling to a special person is possible!

hey bud,

my training lapsed for five months or so last year, while I was in Iraq... over several accounts

it wasn't so bad... it was something to look forward to returning to.

I thought about asking my eve-playing roommates to do it, but the thought of them using my characters for randomness such as [welp] cynos and access to my assets would've bothered me more at night, than knowing skill queue was empty.

iirc, logmein and the eve client have problems in full screen mode. give it some trial runs if you'll be going that route. you can throttle the logmein client's framerate, so even at ultra low (1 fps @ low res), it's viable on slow connections.

it's all about being able to sleep at night.

stay safe,
even though you're a murse

Just have your wife change your skill queue. Then buy her something nice that equals the amount of money you spend on your 5 accounts.

Then make love LIKE A BOSS!
