I run ExeFile.exe to launch EVE.

Usually, when the client pop-up warns of an update, I quit and run the launcher.
This time I didn't.
In any case the patch downloaded and executed in the pre-launcher era manner and installed without problem until the launcher was automatically geared to spin-up and - failed.

Any attempt to run the game through the Launcher or ExeFile results in the same problem.

Any one else experiencing issues? I not sure if it is the patch itself or a recent Wine update that is the cause.

Never-mind, the back-up / test server client launcher rescued the situation. I posted here too soon.
