What skills for mining?

Hi all. Can someone tell me, or give me a link to find out, what skills I need to pick up and in what order, for a miner? I see a lot of mining guides that are extremely in depth, but I can't tell if they are out dated, and I dont see a list of what the best skills are, and in what order I should train them. Thanks :)

Friends don't let friends fly mining barges.

Have you tried mining? Would you keep mining even at a 100% tax rate just because it's fun?

Why do I ask this? It's because mining is the most rock-bottom poor income activity you can do in EVE. Mining is the fast food job of EVE. When you're in high school you feel like the big man on campus because you can buy your own video games... then all your friends become investment bankers, lawyers, doctors, and jet pilots, and you're still putting on a funny hat every day smelling like french fries. Your point of diminishing returns on income is lower than the point at which pretty much every other career in EVE starts to take off.

Some people just like mining. The friend who introduced me to EVE found it relaxing. Others get in industrial corps as an activity they can do to justify hanging out with their friends over voice chat. These people should mine as much as they want.

Other people think "I want to make lots of ISK! How do I become an awesome miner?" These people need to be walked awaaay from the mining barges and gently pointed in any other direction.

Other than the introduction of the Venture frigate you get early in the Industrial career tutorial, and the way that the mining barges have been redesigned to not just be all Hulk all the time, the old guides should still be accurate.

Your ship progression for mining is:

Venture (mining frigate)
Retriever (mining barge)
Mackinaw (exhumer)

Open the Market interface and search for each of these ships, then click the blue Info icon and switch to the Prerequisites tab. It will list the skills required to fly these ships.

Then switch to the Recommended tab, and you'll see a bunch of Certificates. The certificates are groups of skills that you must train, and when you do you automatically get certified. Open your character sheet and switch to the Certificates section, and look around the flow charts for the skills. These are recommended skills for these ships.

In addition to pure mining / industry skills, you also need two things:

1. The ability to fly an Industrial ship such as Bager Mark II (find it in the market, look at its prerequisites) so you can move your ore to the market hub to sell.

2. You need to toughen up your ship so it's not such an easy prey, by training support skills:

Engineering gives you more energy and shields.
Electronics gives you more CPU (important for mining ships), and better targetting.
Mechanics gives you more armor, hull, and the ability to fit ship rigs.
Navigation makes your ships faster.
Drones - Scout Drones lets you fit a few drones to defend your otherwise unarmed ships.
Trade lets you put more buy/sell orders on the market and with reduced taxes.

I appreciate the insight. To be honest, I play FPS games for excitement, but when I am feeling lazy, I like the idea of doing something boring... just floating around space collecting resources and selling them... while listening to an audiobook. That's why I was drawn to EVE. I'm open to suggestions though, as I'm still not entirely sure what my options are. I felt that mining would be a good place to start for a noob.

Thank you. This is exactly the type of info I was looking for. All the guides out there are so in depth that I can't even figure out what they are telling me to do. This will be a good place for me to start, and maybe once I know what the heck I'm doing, I'll try reading the guides out there again. Much appreciated.

I'd suggest also getting hull upgrades and shield management.

One boosts armour hp and the other shield hp by 5% per level. Might not stop you gettting ganked, but it'll make them work for it (and it might save you. maybe). Hull upgrades 4 also gives you access to the damage control II and reinforced bulkheads modules. Very handy, if you're in a ship with a lot of structure HP. 60% resists aren't to be sneezed at.

You'll probably also want Tactical Shield Manipulation 4, so you can fit tech 2 shield hardeners/amplifiers.

Woo! CSM XI!

What about cloaking? If I were in low sec space and ships showed up, could I cloak and warp away before I was spotted?

If ships have arrived on grid, they already know you are there, and you're too close to an asteroid to cloak. Mine aligned to somewhere else so you can warp faster. I suppose you might be able to pull that off if you noticed them as they started warping to the system, but I wouldn't count on it. Or if you just safed up and cloaked when you saw people come into local and went to eat a sandwich to see if they leave by then.

Taxes aren't the point. The point is "Only go into mining if you would mine for free - because you sure as heck aren't going to make much ISK mining."

Don't do this... Just yet. Don't get me wrong, I like it when things blow up, but if you truly are a new player, then try Mining in High-sec first. Then read up on some guides about Low-sec. Get some skills in order, get a nice fit, get into a decent corp, then maybe at that point you will want to venture into Low-sec. (heh..Venture).

Also the ore-specific refining skills, eg

Veldspar Processing,
Scordite Processing,
etc
for all ores that you mine.

Firstly it allows perfect refine without needing Refinery Efficiency 5 (which is a long train), secondly you need them for mining crystals.

I'd also add the Mining Drones skill, plus Drone Interfacing.

Some skills that are useful bumping to at 5 are
Electronics
Engineering

Dont forget the equipment for your ship aswell.

These are my recommendations from a anti ganking perspective.

From low slot to high slot to rigs

Venture
Mining laser upgrade II
Medium shield extender II
Medium F-S9 Regolith shield induction
Adaptive invulnerability field II
Miner II
Miner II
small core defense field extender i
small core defense field extender i
small processor overclocking unit I

HAHAHAHA

And you think that corp taxes are applied to miners.

Do your homework...

Corp taxes are applied to:

* Mission rewards
* Mission bonus rewards
* Bounty prices you get from killing NPC rats.

NOT on mining amounts
NOT on selling stuff on market (those are NPC taxes which can be lowered through skills and standings).

just to add, sometimes you dont need refining skills at all

people for some reason overpay for ore (i guess they are lazy) so its more profitable to sell ore than minerals, you have to do your homework and calculate whats more profitable in system you mine in

if you plan industry career later on,you will need refining skills anyway

I think you've missed the point though. The point being, that if you wouldn't do the activity for 0 ISK, then you're playing EVE wrong. It should not be treated like a 2nd job; it is a game.

Although, I think pretty much every ISK-earning activity would fail that test. I quite like missions (call me weird if you like), but would I do them for free? No.

Indeed. Don't think anybody would do anything if there is nothing to gain from it.

Not usually. Certainly not in any of the trade hubs. It may happen occasionally in some areas, but it's not the norm.

Actually it is quite often more profitable to sell ore than to refine. The reason is that without good skills and standings you lose a percentage of the ore when you refine. So, people with good refining skills and standings can pay a high price for ore, refine it, and sell the minerals at a profit.

Sure, if your refining skills suck, it's better to sell ore. Once you've got perfect refine then it's better to refine and sell minerals

What I read the previous comment to mean was 'don't bother training refining at all, because ore sells higher than its minerals, even if you were refining at 100% efficiency'

i dont know how you define norm but for the past two weeks there (by there i mean heavily populated areas, not trade hubs) is about 10% more money in buy orders of ore than the cost of actuall minerals

its also surprising to me,but who am i to judge Roll

it might not be the case in regions you hang around, but its certainly the case in regions im in

the moral of the story is to do the research before refining
