Time to put an 'Eve Fiction Portal' link in the Eve Universe links list at the top right of the forums?

While I respect the work put into the backstory by a handful of people, it's sad how divorced it all is from what is actually experienced in-game.

To be honest, I haven't been keeping up on the lore stuff for a couple years, once I realized that what I read there, and what I experience in the game have absolutely nothing to do with eachother. I liked most of what I had read, when I was reading it, but it wasn't EVE. (I'd probably have rather played in the universe that I had read about, in truth.)

When I tried to get back into it a year or two ago, and started asking how, I was basically told that I wasn't welcome. I don't know what the culture is like right now among the fiction people. I'm probably not going to even try to get into the fiction again. It's just sad how unapproachable the fiction is to pretty much the entire playerbase.

Should be an interesting read.

Since ISD Mercury is active (again?) will we be seeing ISD Aurora also coming back from the archives?

Great job guys, can't wait to get reading!

I did hear these rumors about Tony not working for CCP... I really don't understand where they came from either.

I'm really curious to see what you've gone in and fleshed out on these societies. I'm sure the Amarr RP nerds are going crazy. Give the Minmatar some love :)

Mercury was never really inactive. We just shifted from doing news articles to doing wiki articles.

Tony left CCP before Templar One was released, if memory serves. Abraxas and plenty other awesome story buffs are still with the company though.

I'm sure we'll see some Minmatar stuff shortly, and with the Amarr and Gallente stuff we have a great level of quality to aim for with that.

It's some serious output thats for sure.

A massive personal thanks from me to all the Mercury members and Staff at CCP (past and present) for adding a, pretty enthralling, read to accompany the best ship-destruction game available on the planet.

Aw, shucks!

If you guys have any questions whatsoever about the content provided, feel free to post them here. I wrote the bulk of the Gallente and Caldari content, so I can answer your questions about those in particular. CCP Eterne can answer your questions about the Amarr content. Do feel free to point out any errors and contradictions, too! With thousands of words to go through, there's bound to some here and there, and we all know the reputation of EVE players and their ability to pick out even the slightest mishap from CCP =P

I also believe we've consistently maintained some of the largest showings at Fanfest out of all the ISD teams, despite being the smallest. So for anyone thinking of buying us a beer, know that you might end up blobbed.

So one simple request from me: Do NOT kill, maim or devour each other. You have both done to many great things for the EvE back story, and are bound to much more for it in the future. You cannot be missed...Big smile

And I salute team Mercury. Keep up the good work. I for one enjoy it.

Here I used to have a sig of our old Camper in space. Now it is disregarded as being the wrong format. Looking out the window I see one thing: Nothing wrong with the format of our Camper! Silly CCP......

As others have noted: Never left, still here.SmileThis coming Feb I'll celebrate my 10th anniversary working for the game, half of it as a GM and half as a writer.

On that note, though ...

I'm curious as to how many people think/thought I'm Tony Gonzales. Big smile I always thought we were pretty dissimilar both in our writing style and in personal appearance.

This may be taking a mildly skewed angle on the point you wanted to make, but in short: We've been making efforts to tie the lore more in with the in-game experience, partly by hosting live events (much more on that in another blog early in the New Year), and partly by focusing some of our writing on in-game entities (including factions and planets).
That being said, the lore has never been aimed to directly recount your experience in-game. It'd be a shoddy, second-rate show if we tried. Instead, we try to paint the backdrop, to give you the idea of the ripples you've caused in the world, rather than just documenting the splash itself.

Echo Mande wrote:

Can't answer that at the present time. Right now, the events are being conducted by an in-house team.

There'll be no bodily harm done to our new writers. However, there is this thing called Viking Endurance that both I and Gnauton go to, and we won't rest until Eterne and the rest have signed up for it as well. It's the kind of thing where the first week just makes you want to die, and then after that you don't ever want to stop.

This is really quite unfortunate and I'm sorry you've faced those barriers. I hope you'll give the fiction another try one day! There's really quite a lot of good stuff in there.

Whether for hardcore RPers or just the casual reader, I'd like to think that as the Fiction Portal becomes better known among the playerbase more people will find it easier to hook into EVE's backstory. The nice thing is, as we add more articles to the portal, new and veteran players alike will have the opportunity to explore the new information together, so hopefully experiences like the one you described won't be repeated.

ISD Galen wrote:

Being part of Mercury is definitely a rewarding experience. Any writer who enjoys a creative challenge and is passionate about EVE's lore should consider signing up.

We're not that strange though.

A sentiment shared within the Mercury team. Love will find a way.

I don't feel that it's divorced from the game experience as much as it doesn't yet match up with the potentialities of the sandbox experience. One of the main reasons I joined the team was a feeling that I think is akin to what you're describing in a way - that we play in a deterministic nonlinear system that needs a few lines to serve as those crucial initial conditions that our own play spins away from. To put it another way - there's so many directions to explore that there's enormous scope for writers, fans of RP and even the basic player to get lost in the jungle and start eating each other until they're found if some basic paths haven't been marked. So much of EVE is uncharted and unwritten, and I wanted to be a part of that, even if it amounted to no-more than a few 'Here Be Monsters' signs*.

I'd be interested in trying to identify exactly what it was that you feel was missing, so that the explorers of Mercury can venture forth and try and hack a path through the jungle towards it. While you might feel that there's a chasm between the actual in-game experience and what you're reading in the fiction, I'm one of the guys that will try his best to cross Springfield Gorge on a Tech II skateboard. And I'm not the only one.

You like what you read, which is great. You like what you're playing, which is also great. Hopefully Mercury now and in the future can bridge the gap. It's most likely going to take several thousand more thousands of words, but perhaps yourself or others can give us a heading. Or even join us and help?
