EvE Forums shouldn't be moderated. It's just another form of carebearism.

An untrained and/or biased moderator can bias the discussion and lead participant responses, that is not good.
Putting tinfoil theories aside, an unmoderated Eve forum would go down hill very rapidly. So no, it should indeed be moderated and they do a fine job.

It worked pretty well for 9 years.
Indeed, moderation has worked well for that time. So why you would want it removed, is rather puzzling.

I was amazed it took so long to lock my thread about Null and highsec, after the first 6 or 7 pages it really started going downhill.

The fact that you guys left the thread alive so long and spent time and effort trying to clean it up rather than just locking it is greatly appreciated and shows great patience.

I'm not sure what it is, and I might be wrong, but it seems to me that the ISD are REALLY on the ball today on the forums. Good on you guys, really.

This being EVE I'm tempted to give your ISD names bounties as a congratulations type thing.

On behalf of the team, many thanks <3. This is exactly what fuels us! Big smile (That, and Navigators whip)

I really appreciate what ISD is doing, but they also need to be careful about remaining unbiased and fair. I've seen many gaming communities suffer very badly to poorly done moderation of the forums.

Good example is Darkfall Online forums. You basically cannot offer any criticism whatsoever about that game on official forum. You will get a suspension, and your topic will be completely eradicated. Not just locked, but deleted, like it never was. Even if all the stuff you said is absolutely and verifiably correct. I know this first-hand because I was once (just a month or two after game's release) made a post about the specific issues with the UI, features that simply did not function. All totally accurate, with constructive suggestions on what needs to be fixed and some suggestions on how. Got a 30 day ban for it. Completely lost all interest in participating in that community after that. Ironically, they did some of the things I was advocating within a year.

Positivity and constructive posts are all good and well. But you also don't want to develop a reputation for too much moderation of "undesirable" subjects. For example, when recently a thread about drones and AI was being trolled to death and eventually locked, nothing happened to the trolls, but the discussion thread got nixed. Instead, would have been better to kick out the trolls and hand out a few suspensions but keep the discussion alive for the greater good. Though I admit that trying to salvage that thread was probably a lost cause, too much trolling, so in that case I'm actually with ISD on the decision to just hack it off and start fresh.

In closing, kudos to you guys! Just don't overdo it. Walk the fine line with balance and precision.

I have removed two trolls from this thread.

I would like to agree that ISD does good, often thankless work that gets them trolled and harassed for essentially no real compensation. Their dedication to both EVE Online and making sure that guys like Falcon, Navigator, and myself get to actually do work besides moderating forums all day makes me appreciate them beyond measure.

Cheers to the CCL and ISD in general. You guys don't get enough love.

We are very vigilant of this. We don't want people to not criticize EVE. Criticism is the only way to know if you're doing something good or not. As long as it is constructive, of course.

I've seen a few cases where some ISD are overzealous and I've reversed a few of those myself. But in general, they do a great job.

I had to delete another post attacking ISD and CCP. Discussion of forum moderation is against the rules, so you should petition if you have a problem. And saying you petitioned something does not give you reign to then complain about the moderation.

It's nice to see some of you elitest ISD and Devs speak. :-p

Seriously, I got warm fuzzies about it and am glad you were happy to see the thread. Even you guys deserve a little joy once in awhile.

I don't always agree with the way forum moderation is handled but you all deserve respect for your efforts. And I realize -- everyone's prejudices/perspectives aside -- you're looking out for the game which hopefully results in a better end game for all of us ... at least until Dec 21 when the world ends.

Yes, discussion is against the rules. But if complaining is discussion, why isn't praise? Inconsistency.

There's nothing worse than an EVE player, generally considered to be top of the food chain in the MMO world, that cannot smacktalk with wit and coherency.

isnt this thread discussing moderation and in need of being moderated? Or is it exempt of that cause a blue posted here?

And, isn't sanity really just a one-trick pony anyway? I mean all you get is one trick, rational thinking, but when you're good and crazy, oooh, oooh, oooh, the sky is the limit.

Discussion of moderation would be acceptable if you weren't discussing specific instances. The discussion in this thread, for example, is about the CCL team's work, not about specific actions. If the thread had instead been about a general bias of the moderators against certain characters, that might have been fine too (though if it was true, you'd expect that thread to be shut down just like any thread on the Darkfall forums critical of the publisher).

So why wasn't my post worthy of deletion? I was heavily criticising the ISD moderation. Wasn't it enough of an attack? It leaves me wondering what was so bad about the posts you deleted and are now classified secrets.

What you should be able to do, as ISD/DEV, is to leave the post intact and punish the poster in a very visible and obvious way. In this way people can SEE what a bad post is and learn from these mistakes.

Deleting posts is just a waste of time; no one other than the poster learns anything and the poster doesn't really get punished enough to get it through to them. Theres a LOT to be said for public humiliation. Eg you should be able to tag that persons forum avatar in some way, maybe make it green or put a stamp on it so that in EVERY post that person has made EVERYONE can see that they've broken the rules and been punished.

Discussing specific instances of moderation is against the rules. Is discussing the overall quality of moderation on these forums against the rules?
