Suggestions appreciated: Power of 2 for a PVP alt

I would like to take advantage of the Power of 2 offer and some time off from work during this holiday season.

So far, I have completed the basic missions, and took the miner route, which I want to continue, increasing skills for that purpose and refining. My play time was limited, but I really enjoy it; regardless of being blown more than once. I want to continue mining, as it really helps me relax, and enjoy some radio.

I've been playing the game since April 2012, still a noob and I do like the challenge this game poses, learning, experimenting, etc. Reason why I created my own corporation, as my play time was very inconsistent.

Now, not sure what would be the recommended route to get started with a new character for PVP. I will follow Louis's epic skill guide v1.1 but unsure of the race and ships to target.

I know that in time this is a moot point, as EVE's skill system allows to learn anything, but based on the experience of players who have started from scratch, what race would you prefer and why, and also what ships would be recommended.

Also, this time I intend to join a corporation, get on whatever voice comm required, and want to be part of a group. What corporation would you recommend? Eve University? RvB?

Please consider that for all purposes, I am a noob to EVE PVP, but I've seen enough tournaments, ratting and exploding while mining that I want to play that side of the game.

Your feedback is really appreciated.

Thank you.

Race and ship is hard to tell. Cause each race / ship is good at different things / fights.

So it's also depending on what type of PvP fights you are looking for...

As for corporation, if your alt is purely going to be a PvP pilot:

* RvB if you like stuff from 1v1 up to fleet engagements without politics.
* FW if you like to PvP with some meaning
* SOV null if you like to be a puppet and grind structures, be part of a blob or the occasional good fight.

Understood, thanks for the feedback!

All races look good, but I am leaning towards Minmatar or Amarr for the race.

As for the style of PVP, I've really enjoyed Kil2 and his streams, as well as the large scale battles during the tournaments; so not all that clear on which one I would prefer, but would like to try as many as possible.

I do need to learn 'the ropes' of PVP, losing some ships, and a corporation that is willing to help someone in my position is what I am looking for.

Again, thanks for the comments!

I advise minimitar and then cross training to gallente.

IMO the most important thing is to skill correctly - I.e. don't rush to get into a battleship. Get into an assault frig and then work up all your support skills (nav/electronics etc).

All ship classes benefit from these and so you'd be a fool to make the mistake so many others make.

My rule of thumb is if I can't t2 a fit... I don't fly it

Also re: your current toon. At some point train him for cov ops/probing. Once you start flying expensive shinies you'll be pleased to have a toon to +1 with

Things have changed a fair bit since the frigate/cruiser rebalance.

Previously Minmatar were way ahead for new players with the Rifter/Thrasher/Rupture combo. Minmatar are still very good. but other races have caught up. I'm not a fan of the Amarr style of combat so rarely fly them. Both Gallente and Caldari are both now very solid for new pvp characters.

You can get lots of pvp experience in T1 frigs dessies and cruisers. You should probably choose to specialize in one type of weapons and either shield/armor tank from the beginning otherwise it will take forever to cross train. Some key skills:

evasive maneuvering to align faster
drones 5 esp if flying gallente or amarr
fitting skills (engi, elec, energy systems operation, energy management, rigging, WU5 / AWU4 if you can stomach it)
tank skills
T2 small weapons
gunnery/drone/missile support skills
thermodynamics/nanite interfacing/nanite operation
racial frigate 5
shield emissions systems / energy emission systems / remote armor repair systems (if you ever expect to use reps in a gang)

There's really no reason not to train all races frigs and small weapons to at least level 4, and then you of course have to train all the support skills. That gives you a lot of flexibility straight away, and while you train support skills you can find out which ships you most enjoy, and specialize in them.

Even if you want just a basic t1-fit frigate, the ship skills and weapon skills are not insignificant given that it's time you could be spending training critical support skills...Even more nowadays that there are multiple good ships per class per race.
