drone assist not working

So after retribution i thought finally i can take my domies for a spin in low sec. I was hoping i will be able to set assist to my main and then pew pew without tabing to different windows... of course that would be too good to be true. My question is, is it intended not to work on non flashy ships? Because I could swear yesterday on fleet fight they actually assisted whomever i shot.

So how about it? I looked for posts going back to 2007 people complaining about drone machanics. In 5 years this "area' has not been looked at?

Make that ten years... with the exception of reducing the number of drones that can be fielded, which wasn´t really helpful for them.

I got lost in thought... it was unfamiliar territory.
