You need an API key to view "sensitive" character information.... API keys can be configured to show Skills, Market Orders, Contracts, Standings, Employment History, Attributes, Implants, etc, etc, etc.... He can create and provide you with an API key if he chooses, but it's not something you get to see normally...

There are many 3rd party tools (EvE Mon, EFT, etc..) that take the API key and put the information in nice presentable applications.

He would have to have signed up with a 3rd party service such as eve-who

not everyone that plays is listed, and those that are listed don't always display 'all the things'

Also feel free to ask questions here; this forum is very friendly to newbies.

If you want to see in general what other people have trained, go to the Character Bazaar forum. Characters for sale are posted on eveboard.com and their trainings are shown.

You can train whatever you want, your choices aren't limited in any way. In general, people pick a profession / something they want to do, then pick a bunch of ships they're interested in, then research to find out what the guns / weapons are for those ships, and then they train the skills for the ships, the guns, and support skills. Or, if you're interested in industry, manufacturing, etc., skills are grouped into handy categories.

You can ask him if he can make an eveboard.com page with his API.
He can even password protect it and give you the password.
On EVEboard you would be able to see what skills he trained (btw, skills trained =/= things learned)

Why do you need to know what he learned? Is it because you want to know what you should learn?
You will probably be interested in different things anyways. The skills aren't all that confusing, you aren't going to regret learning some skill. At worst it will be a few hours training to do something you almost never do.
Start by learning your "core" skills to a low level and trying out a bunch of things, then ask about the things that seem fun. Decide what you want to do. Look at the things you need to use to do those things and see what skills they need.
