I'm enjoying surfing Dotlan for ideas of place to explore and enjoy... But I notice the alliance tags on lots of systems out there in null-sec. Am I correct in assuming that the alliance flag means: 'stay out'? It means: 'you can't dock here' and I will be a trespasser. So, if I am interested in exploring null-sec space I can pretty much write that off unless I join a corp that has sovereignty there?

Thanks for any information.

You should concider all of null sec to be hostile, but that doesn't mean that you can't go there if you are looking for adventure. Do not expect to be able to dock at player controlled stations/outposts. You can still dock at NPC controlled stations. There are threats (such as Warp Disruption Bubbles) that are unique to null sec. Therefore, your success there is likely to depend on a wider understanding of game mechanics. As with most things in Eve, it can be easier if you work with more experienced friends. However, there is little that actually stops you from heading out there on your own.

Yes generally Sov allainces will lock out Neutral players from docking at their stations. However this does not exclude you from exploring those regions. As long as you understand that the majority of players in these areas will see you as hostile. Most of us live by a code "Not blue Shoot it" in our own space. Such is the life in null sec.

With a covert ops ship or cloaky ship, you really wont run into a lot of trouble. Since if things get a little "hot" you can just cloak, wait/log or go a different direction. There are NPC regions with stations that any one can dock at, so be aware of those if your looking for a safe harbour. So I would encourage you to head out and explore :) As long as you are aware of the risks. But consider that most of the players that inhabit these regions will see you first as a threat before they consider shooting you. As long as you keep moving through "busy" systems, you shouldnt run into too much trouble. Be aware of gate camps, and warp drag bubbles.

The riskiest systems will be gateway systems. Those systems/gates that give access to null sec, but once you are deep in null sec the likelihood of gate camps are greatly reduced. Give it a go and let us know how it goes! Be sure to upgrade your clone and travel without implants. If given half a chance anyone will take the opportunity to shoot and kill you, pod and all :)

Have FUN!

The short answer is yes.... but don't let that stop you from visisting....

Nullsec is a Free-Fire zone... Anyone can shoot anyone, with no in-game consequences.

Realize, that when traveling ANYWHERE in game (even in highsec), assume everyone will shoot you if it is in their best interest. Example... if you put 100m in an untanked iteron, it might be in my best interest to blow up your iteron and loot it with an alt... even if that means I lose a ship to do it.

Since, in nullsec, there is no Concord to avenge you, and since you reconning an area is generally not in the best interest of the residents there, residents will normally attempt to destroy your ship and pod and be done with you, rather than have you around and potentially able to cause problems.

Only people with positive diplomatic relations (Alliance mates, corp mates, blues) are left to wander unhindered, and even then friendly fire is not all that uncommon. As such, if you do not have blue status, you typically cannot dock, and will be attacked if given the opportunity.

However, you should still visit... just evade hostiles while you explore.... Some ships are better for this than others, and make sure you read up on bubble mechanics before you visit!

Pretty much, with the notable exception of npc sov null sec. These are null sec regions controlled by (mainly pirate) npc corps. Some regions have both npc and player sov just to confuse things. In rough order of the amount of free space to use (though not necessarilly safety to do so or get to);

Stain - Sansha home region, all npc sov lots of stations.
Curse - Angel home region, all npc sov, lots of stations.
Syndicate - Syndicate home region, all npc sov, lots of stations
Venal - Guristas home region, all npc sov, few stations.
Outer Ring - ORE home region, all npc sov, few stations.
Great Wildlands - Thukker home region, all npc sov, few stations.
Pure blind - Sisters/Mordus home region, mixed sov, few npc stations
Geminate - Society home region, mixed sov, few npc stations
Fountain - Serpentis home region, mixed sov, few npc stations
Delve - Blood Raiders home region, mixed sov, few npc stations

Each of these null sec regions has at least one npc station you can base from, the first 3 you have basically the entire region to choose from.

This is one of the things the Tech 3 cruisers are good for. You can set a stealth configuration on them and still be able to probe, pvp, and kill NPCs, and you don't really have to dock all that often if you build the things right.

There are also stealth bombers, but their applications are a little more limited to PvP-- while you can rat or run sites with them, it's not really convenient and it can be slow enough that you'll get jumped, and small cargo means you need a home base to head back to every day or so.

1.) ALL of null-sec is hostile.

2.) SOV means the alliance owns the systems (and thus gets benefits from it - PI and POS fuel discount - and can upgrade the system).

3.) Player owned stations in null-sec can refuse you docking rights.

But NONE of these things in itself say you are not allowed to go there. If an alliance doesn't want you in their space, they have to kick you out by force.

Also, there are places in null-sec called NPC null-sec. Nobody can officially own those systems (though some alliance kind of control that area). Nobody can own the stations, so you can always dock in them (though you can be camped in by enemy fleet).
