Sounds:
Not good.

Some weapons i've tested sounds goods.
But they lacks punchs. My assault rifle in BF3 sounds more dangerous than my 800mm Autoguns, and my M95 far better than 1400mm guns.

It may come from me, but Med lasors are a joke. Seriously. It sounds like a water bomb.

Overall, remember: Your smallest weapon if as large as a tank gun.
It must be violent, brutal. A clash of titans.
Lasors must screams through space, Autocannons must sounds like "Reapeating" "Artillerie". Artillerie must be feel like thunder.

Warp effect:
I don't like it. I want a sonic BOOM, a BANG, not a "woosh".

Explosions:

They just sucks right now.
This is the kind of explosions we need.
We a giant, long flash.
Make it epic, don't be afraid of overkill. Everybody loves explosions.
Or if you want to go that way, make it slow and beautiful.
With secondary explosions, sparks, that kind of stuffs.
If your artists have time, you could add effects later: hull breaking appart, pieces of ships drifting in space, pod ejecting at the first second, followed by crew capsules.

Do not fear overkill. Hours of gunfire always end up getting boring, anyway. We will just turns the sounds down.
Remember: Your game is about killometer-long Battleships firing nuclear warheads at near-light speed across tens of kilometers of space while rushing at around 1000km/h.
It must sounds as awesome to hear as to read. Cool

Except that, I agree with you.

Crew.
But this part belongs to F&D.

What do i want for explosions: I want ships shatter to pieces like at start of this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRBnhFpnxSs

With sounds... Agree with op.

I disagree!

As it was already said, multiple times, explosions are underwhelming, and so are the sounds.

You did post a nice reference part, that flash shows and suddenly a wreck appears, way better than a popcorn fart in space.

And the sounds?
Kill a ship...POOING, salvage a wreck...POOING, loot the remaining can...POOING.
Same sound for all 3 of them, or maybe its subtly different but only audible to bats.
Weapons sounds just dont give them credit, using arties or ACs you just dont get the feeling of shooting a mighty weapon.

Just a quick example, 800mm AC -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schwerer_Gustav

Then imagine 7 of these on a Machariel (or 4 or Vargur) and underwhelming sounds they make when something goes POOING.

Why doesn't CCP take a page of Homeworlds book, and make ships die like there, take critical dmg, ship tilts on a side, the sound of metal twisting and bulkheads collapsing then a nice and big boom.

Something like this, for a game this old, missiles left blackened spots on the hull. And when it starts to die, that metallic sound of ship twisting and losing structural integrity is awesome at 1:31.
Sorry, cant find a clip without music in the background, but its still audible.

Won a G510 keyboard in AT-X on  21.07.2012. Still not delivered, CCP keeps quiet. Customer support needs a raise.

I'm still waiting for the devs to realise that sound experience is just as important as the graphical experience. Retribution sounds update doesn't reflect that.

Also agree this epic game deserves epic explosions.

I support this thread!

Explosions and sounds are extremely unspectacular in EVE. I always want to get my brother into eve and play with him, but he always says to me that the effects and battles look terrible boring and hes absolutely right.
For 2003 it looks ok (not even good), but not in this year!

Hell, just search for the game Haegemonia on youtube and take a lesson on how ships have to explode. AND THIS GAME CAME OUT ONE YEAR BEFORE EVE! Batleship explosions take several seconds, they break apart, several explosions come out and sparks fly into all drections. Its a SHOW that i loved to look at when i played that game.

Its also way better than Homeworld effects. In Eve, i dont even notice it (visually) when a ship explodes.

We dont need Crysis 3 visuals, but give us something thats at least up to date!

This is maybe the most important part to get new players into the game.

Also the 800mm AC Sounds ******* weak. Please make it better with more BOOOOOM!

*Just a constructive feedback*

If I remember correctly, CCP said hey couldn't make opulent explosions because of server load and lag. What I don't understand however is why it's not possible to calculate them completely client- side. Maybe somebody could enlighten me on this matter.

What I do know certainly however is that sound doen't have anything to do with lag or network traffic. So there is no excuse for the terrible sound effects Eve has now. CCP you lazy bums, start working on the sound alreadyTwisted

As for the lasers, just take the Freespace 2 sounds for example, Colossus firing its laser batteries sounds awesome with that charging up and stuff. And don't forget to add a lot of bass to itPirate

Nope. Visual effects have absolutely nothing to do with the server. Its just a very bad excuse or it comes from a person who has no idea how the technique behind that works. Sure, if CCP wants to make area of effect damage, that is indeed calculated on the server, but even that wouldnt be a big problem for actual hardware.
I dont understand why CCP does not put more effort on this very important part because its a topic that appears in regular time periods for years now.

Honestly, games that are old for years (almost decade) manage to have some simple things a joy to look at.
Ships going down, explosions that light up nearby objects (didn't notice that one in EvE, correct me if i am wrong), the sound of beam weapons and projectiles.

Hell, i like HW2 ship explosions better than current Eve ones. They are old and low tech, but at least the flash and bang means something died and not a popcorn was made.

On the visual effects matter, didn't some CCP dev say that missile change graphics was "CLIENT SIDE ONLY"?
Ship A fires 6 missiles on Ship B, missiles travel at calculated speed and impact.
Server doesn't render missile trails and crap, if it does, CCP made a bit of a blunder somewhere in programing.

They may as well make ponies as missile trails and "friendship is magic" as missile impact sound, my crappy PC is showing and rendering this.

Hint: allow mods, I guarantee absolute epic sound and visuals everywhere.
