A friend recommended me to start building ammo if I want to learn about industry. I made some math with it and I'm not amused at all :(
How do you people make money out of it.

My 1st attempt: LINK

The new mining frigate would make more with just mining Spodumain. I might be doing it wrong, but I don't have billions to spend.

First you'll need to make sure production efficiency skill is trained to level V. Anything less and you'll not make a profit on most items.

Next you'll need a BPO with a high ME level, which you can research on your own, but with ammo you might be better off just buying a pre-researched one for a premium price.

And finally with high volume low isk items like ammo you wont make much if anything selling in trade hubs. All the profit from ammo comes from seeding it in stations where there may be a demand, and then selling it normally at a higher price then the trade hubs (but lower then anyone else in the station). Ammo is one of those things people buy all the time and all over the place, so you can easily set a high price on it and still sell it almost everywhere.

And with ammo don't sell it to buy orders, instead setup your own sell orders. Selling to a buy order just means you are selling it to someone who will re-list it and sell it at a higher price, so skip the middle man and sell it yourself. Sure you wont get instant isk, but you'll get more isk over time.

Try other ammo types. Nova Cruise missiles for example usually have much better margins.
When I manufactured ammo, I was very profitable on a single character just using pre-researched missile BPCs. I think you can get them with 1500 runs and usually really cheap on contracts.

Using that type of BPC, and just manufacturing out of stations, I was able to make an easy 10-15 million per day just selling at a few mission hub stations - around 3-4 I think.

I bought all my minerals off the market. Not that you couldn't mine minerals yourself, but always include the selling price of your minerals in the equation to see if your manufacturing activity is really profitable.

Long story short, manufacturing things can be really profitable - just choose the right stuff and the right locations

Yeah, all depends on the type of item. Some don't make any money, some do. Some do but take months to sell.

Industry is really about knowing the market more than knowing how to build stuff. Once you can build an item, you probably won't lose the ability to do that. The market can change on a whim.

You might want to play around with the program in my sig. Not really for beginners but it might help. The manufacturing tab lets you compare different types of items against one another.

Another way to play with the numbers is http://www.fuzzwork.co.uk/blueprints/

One small difference between manufacturing and mining:

It's hard to mine while you're asleep. If you do mine while you're asleep, please say so, so we can point CCP Sreegs or Stillman at you.

Manufacturing is a case of 'dump all the materials in the right place, click a few times, go for a pizza, sleep, work, have some more pizza, sleep, work, collect the finished goods, dump on the market.'

Woo! CSM XI!
