Salvaging 5, just ran the odds - wow

This took me by surprise.

I run 2 salvagers on my ship with my salvaging skill at level 4. If I hit a wreck with both I have a 40% chance of success and so it normally takes at least 2 goes.

By training to level 5 and fitting Tech 2 slavagers this chance goes up to 70%!

The base description on the T2 salvager is so innocent looking (5% to 7%). I was amazed when I worked it out.

Salvaging 5 is definitely worth training if you spend any time salvaging wrecks.

Go all the way: ORE Industrial 5. It is worth it (assuming you are using Small Tractor Beam IIs on it).

And yeah, salvaging 5 is super awesome.

Eh. Not to rain on your parade, but that's not how the math works exactly. Salvage chances are rolled independently, so your two 20% chances actually come to a 36% of salvaging on the first go (chance of not p = .8, multiply the two chances together to get .64, subtract from 1).

In contrast, T2 salvagers give you 1-(1-.35)^2 = 57.75% chance of salvaging. Which yes, is a huge increase, but also has the right math to back it up.

Ah yes sorry, I was being a spanner.

P(A OR B) = 1 - [P'(A) AND P'(B)]

It's all coming back to me now, venn diagrams and stuff.

So if I flip two coins the odds of getting a head on one of them is 75%?

Confirming the math:

Chance for at least one salvager to be successful
= 1 - chance to fail with all salvagers
= 1 - chance to fail with one savalager ^ number of salvagers
= 1 - (1 - chance to succeed with one salavager) ^ number of salavagers

Note that this is the same math for hacking, code breaking, and ECM modules within optimal range (falloff increases chance of failure).

As for two coins (50% chance of heads):
HH
HT
TH
TT
So at least one heads 75% of the time [or 1 - the chance to get tails with both = 1 - 25% = 75%].

The chance to get only one heads is 50%.
