It's been sitting in a box for years, in very good quality, CD isn't scratched, although the manual looks like it has some minor damage (moisture perhaps, tiny dent on the back from the plastic clips).

I had a look at the list of EVE Online expansions, but I couldn't find 'Gemini' amongst them. Does anyone know what version that is?

I also tried redeeming the CD Key, but as far as I can tell it must be an old-style key that is no longer recognised. Worth petitioning it?

Still not sure exactly what Gemini is, or was, but i found a mention of it from 2006.

I'd guess it was an early build and not an expansion per se.

Gemini seems to refer to a patch/a collection of patches that were released before the first expansion (Castor).

I originally thought that Gemini simply referred to the release version of the game but the devblog below seems to contradict that: "During [...] the first months after release we were in the mode of fixing existing immediate bugs/usability and performance issues, so the last delivery, Gemini, dragged out."

However, some Wikipedia user (and the Finnish wikipedia article as far as I can tell) seem to agree with my original notion:

Gemini was not actually a content patch, but is included here for the sake of completeness. When EVE Online: The Second Genesis was released, the base was codenamed Gemini, version 1.00.0000.

In any case the last Gemini patch was 1254, released on December 2nd 2003.

Before we released EVE in May this year, we had been developing it under what is referred to as Staged Delivery Approach, covered, for example, in Steve McConnell's excellent book Software Project Survival Guide. During the last months before release and the first months after release we were in the mode of fixing existing immediate bugs/usability and performance issues, so the last delivery, Gemini, dragged out.

The fact that we hadn’t split up the development tracks, into a current and a next stage, has made it a bit difficult for us to fix little bugs/usability issues. This has become even more evident now that we are preparing for the Techlevel II release.

We have now done the work required to split up development into 2 tracks (deliveries), Gemini and Castor. Gemini is the track that ended with build 1238, having that in a branch separate from Castor (Techlevel II), allows us to fix some of the more annoying issues with that track, without being interrupted with the much larger changes going on in Castor. We are now doing that and are in the process of testing the fixes, so expect a bug fix and usability patch this week (if you have favourite, minor, bugs/usability issues with 1238 then feel free to post them here and we’ll see about adding them to the next hot-fix patch to Gemini).

Castor as some of you might already know, includes the techlevel II manufacturing process, improved agent system and standing system, along with fractional support in market and continuous market seeding. We are nearing code freeze on Castor, when that commences parts of the development team will be moved to the next stage, Shiva, which includes Techlevel 3, player items in space and manufacturer-id tracking for manufacturer specific bonuses to equipment.

For the duration of the Castor code freeze we’ll be working on 3 branches, Gemini and hot fixes to that, testing the Castor code freezed branch and bug fixing only and commencing the development of the designs ready for Shiva. This might sound like a complex endeavour but it is really much simpler than what we have been dealing with for the passed months, which has been keeping, this all in a one branch. This is also a process we are familiar with as we developed EVE for under it for 2 years.

What does this mean for you? Well it should mean that simple short comings with the current build on TQ are much more quickly addressed and major improvements to the game are more tested and can include even more exciting things. We are also working on marketing material to advertise to you, the player, and to prospective buyers what each new stage brings.

2003 .... when the world was still fresh and CCP believed in code freezes and testing before release.

I still have my Eve Online release CD around here somewhere. I'm tempted to see if it is possible to install it and update all the way to the current version.

Wow. That's gotta be rare/valuable. Shocked

It's not even mentioned here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eve_Online_expansions

It begins with:

Castor

Release date: December 18, 2003

Castor was the first major content addition. It focused on refining current functions along with adding "Tech 2" elite components and ships. With its release, Eve players saw conquerable stations in 0.0 security (deep space) systems, the introduction of the agent mission running system, the introduction of research agents, and many other features released between the launch of Castor and its follower, Exodus.[2]

What ever happened to this? Why did we get the Invention Casino rather than being able to develop our own designs for ship/mods?

I have tried this, it just tells you that you would be better of with a fresh install and links to the download. Also eve box best box.

The beginning of EVE certainly had a chaotic birth, that's for sure.

I started with the Dominion box. It's bonus InterBus Shuttle is locked away good. I fly it once in awhile on Sisi.

I should take scans of select areas of the manual, such as the old capacitor rose, where modules appeared on the top half of the circle and you had to click the 'high, med, or low' mode buttons on the bottom to view/activate modules on other racks, or the guide on how to start your own corporation. Apparently it only cost 500 ISK back then.

Alpheias, the box looks the same as the one to the left in your picture. I've done a little research and it appears 'Gemini' is v1.0 of EVE. Now I feel a bit like an archeologist.

I wonder if you can successfully patch from 1.0 to Retribution...

Wow. I'd give it a shot. That would definitely be kudo's for the Dev Team if it works.

Trivia time:

I've got a whole bunch of eve patch files saved up on disk (don't ask my why I don't know myself), one of them is this:

evepatch01238-01246_gemini.exe

It's dated 17.Nov.2003. Castor, the first expansion came out 16.Dec.2003, between Gemini and Castor there were two small patches.

My copy of the EvE install media has this in the readme.txt file:

Quote:
EVE Online readme.txt help file
v1.03
3/28/2003

The build number of that version is 934, or at least the first patch file that I have is evepatch00934-01128.exe The setup.exe file in that install media is dated 06.Apr.2003 and is 483 megabytes in size. To date there has been ten expansions/patches that were larger in size than that.
