"Over the past few years, Patrick, an inspiration to generations of astronomers, fought his way back from many serious spells of illness and continued to work and write at a great rate, but this time his body was too weak to overcome the infection which set in, a few weeks ago."

Very saddening news. Brian May's tribute is a fitting one: "Patrick is irreplaceable. There will never be another Patrick Moore. But we were lucky enough to get one."

Rest in Peace.

Absolute legend! He made science more cool than any school lesson ever could!

@Graygor - yes it was Games Master. I still remember one of the early episodes when my then-favourite magazine(Mean Machines Sega) lost an easy challenge to a rival magazine(Sonic 2, Chemical Plant Act 2 Speed Run) and the big man mocked my guys in quite an eloquent manner that was quite lost on me at the time.

The Gaming MoD - retro to modern, console to MMO, I blog about it if it's a game and I'm interested in it. Yes, I play games other than Eve and I don't care if you think I'm wrong.

Never heard of the name or seen the face, so I'm guessing this is a British tragedy. My condolences all the same.

He'll be missed, he introduced entire generations of British children to astronomy, was on the forefront of gaming TV and his research was used by both the Americans & Russians for their respective space programs.

If anyone is interested Wikipedia has quite a substantial write up on him

Guess the torch will now be passed on directly to Prof. Brian Cox (as far as earned authority goes), who has undoubtedly appealed to the next generation with his easily digestable and fluid presentational skills, though its doubtful his xylophone repertoire is as good.

He was the man responsible for sparking my interest in space. That interest led me to EVE in the first place. He will be missed.

By 'torch' I simply mean conveying potentially baffling concepts in an easily understandable manner, in digestible chunks, to young impressionable minds whether this be via live conferencing, TV, DVD, serialisation, what-have-you.

Prof. Cox does this really well, as Sir Patrick did in his day, minus many of our modern-day gizmos.

The man wore hawiian shirts and forever had a monocol and his star parties had all sorts of big names showing up to do science. I have watched sky at night for the last 17 years and his loss is a bitter blow.

Shame.

Odd bloke, but interesting to watch and obviously very passionate about his subject, and able to communicate that passion in a positive way and pull you in to the subject. Also the one guy who could wear a monocle and not look like a complete ****.

He had to go sometime though and to be honest it's surprising he lasted as long as he did. RIP.

Always wondered whether this item was a hat-tip to Patrick. It'd be nice to think so.

So, CCP -since you've created the premier space-sim, and he was the top man for generations of budding astronomers -how about naming some celestial object of your choice in his honour? You never know -could get you some really positive press.
