Nvidia Graphics card issues

I've had a new computer for about 3 months now, after my last one was considered to be 'inadequate'.
However, lately (more specifically, since the last few patches) Eve online has been running rather sluggish on it. Framerate sits at 80 with spikes whenever I'm entering or exiting warp (or undocking).
Which is extremely weird since it used to be able to run 4 clients at max detail without any issue whatsoever. The problem is only occurring with Eve Online, Far Cry 3 for example runs in ultra detail no problem. Frapsing in Eve drops framerate while lagging down to 8.
I have an i7 6-core, GTX680 and 32GB's of RAM. Stuff like this shouldn't be happening.

I've managed to isolate the problem, and it appears to be driver related. All drivers give the same problem, currently I'm using the 301.42 driver, since the rest are even worse and are known to cause problems. Downside is that this particular driver crashes every 4 seconds (literally) during big fleet fights.
The strange thing is that every time I reinstall the drivers, Eve works perfectly fine. Framerate shoots up to 460, frapsing is no problem at all. A reboot later, things go back downhill.

Is there a known workaround for this issue and/or is there a fix coming? Because seriously, this is getting extremely annoying. Having to reinstall graphics drivers just to be able to properly play a game and enjoy it is downright silly.

Hm, no, this is not a known issue as far as I know. I develop on a 690 and have not seen this kind of behavior... From what I understand it works fine when you install a new driver, but then slows down when you reboot?

Have you tried doing a clean install of the driver? It's a checkbox in the Nvidia driver installer, which will remove all traces of the old driver first, to be extra safe there's nothing bad hanging around. It might be worth a shot.

Another thing you can do if you have some time is to change the settings and see if there is anything that makes a difference; windowed vs fullscreen, AA on/off, shader quality etc. This is just to help us narrow down any issues, you're totally right that a bad-ass card like that should run smoothly with everything and the kitchen sink turned on!

Oh, maybe also check that there's nothing in the driver control panel that overrides a setting, like forcing on VSync, or Triple Buffering. That might slow the game down if it randomly kicks in after a reboot.

Thanks for the report!

Im running a GTX 570 on an i5 system and I' ve been having random computer lockups only while paying Eve before Retribution and I have tried every nVidia driver out there with little success. The situation seemed aggravated while I was in a fleet or in Jita and thought that maybe it was a network issue because of the lag spikes that I would experience during those times. Sometimes I woulfd get socket closed messages, sometimes I wouldnt.

I came accross an interesting article with users noticing similar behavior in other games and tried the suggestion layed out. It is an unlikely workaround however it does make sense to a degree. Try it out and see if it works for you.

Below is the suggestion layed out in the article:

Leave the multimedia class scheduler service running, but disable its network throttling "feature":

  • Open regedit
  • Go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Multimedia\SystemProfile
  • There will be an entry for network performance throttling, default value is 10; set it to FFFFFFFF hex (willl look like 0xFFFFFFFF to the right of the entry)
  • Reboot

Well, I may have found the source of the problem.

I completely removed my Nvidia drivers, but that didn't include the physx and nvidia sound drivers which were still from a higher install version. For some reason they refused to uninstall when using a clean install.
After reinstalling version 304.79 I've had no problems whatsoever, for now.

So my guess is that the problem lies with either the Nvidia sound drivers, or more likely, the PhysX drivers.
I will be keeping an eye out though and if there's any more problems, I'll post in here. Not going to be too optimistic about it.

Well, apparently I spoke too soon.

Lagspikes are back with a vengeance and fps is down to 90 or so.
