Did CCP ever provide a reason for removing a smart feature of the game?

Apparently they were unable to maintain a piece of code that takes few days to be rewritten from scratch.

Well, everybody needs to make their mark. And changing a feature that was probably perceived to be unused by a large part of the population ("EVE has sound?") seems like a safe bet. So you remove the ability for your customers to personalize a piece of the game experience, and hand them a new and better integrated environment.

The same people that weren't listening to the music before aren't listening to it now, plus even more people aren't listening now. It's a win!

If that's what you were after, anyway.

I'm really gutted the Jukebox is gone...Please could we have it back? There's nothing more I liked than just flicking to Below the Asteroids and just chilling...*sad panda*

I want to see it returned also. Having to tab out to change music on the media player is a hassle and the only safe time to do it is when docked up, then if I'm in the mood for the Eve music again then i have to stop the media player, go back into eve, press esc to open the menu and turn the music back up, then if a tune plays that I don't like then it's back to turning it back down, tabbing back to media player and turning that back on.
On a low end computer or laptop, all the tabbing would cause the computer to lock up whilst they switched, which turns a hassle into an issue, and not everybody has the graces of a media keyboard so they can skip tracks, replay tracks or pause the music.

Whilst removing the jukebox isn't going to cause the same kind of uproar as say... the riot Incarna caused when people were forced to upgrade to pixel shader 3, it has annoyed a lot of people that a function that has been working since launch has been removed, and taken away one of the things that made Eve unique over other mmos.

I like the new sounds they introduced (That is why I do not slide the thing all the way to the left - even when in fleetSmile). Those new sounds really make me feel as if I was in a sci-fi/horror movie. It finally gives the impression that space is a dark and cold place where anything can jump on you at every second. Now if they could just remove local....

having a check box would be nice since you can leave the music volume set to a comfortable level for yourself. It would also make it easier to add a keyboard shortcut to toggle music on and off. Say to mute the music while listening to teamspeak. Just a thought. This is the configuration I prefer in most other games. In EVE I tend to have the music off and instead play a funk and acid jazz station in the background so it doesn't matter to me either way.

BTW, why was the jukebox removed?

They made it so that different sounds or songs play when your in high, low, null, or w-space. Different variations of these songs/sounds play depending on whether your in combat, mining, the amount of ships destroyed in the last hour in the system, etc. I can see why they did it and it is an interesting concept, but this shouldn't be a mini-incarna. They should give us the choice to have it the new way or just click a button or check a box to have the old jukebox back.

If I had an option in my old jukebox to play "ambient music that changes with surroundings", I'd check it and leave it checked most of the time. But every once in a while I'm going to want to pick a song.

The jukebox was one of the things that really impressed me with EVE, that really set it apart from other games and made it special. Please bring it back!! I'm literally suffering from jukebox withdrawal. When I start EVE, I immediately try to open up the jukebox and play with it. It's one of the first things I'd do every time I log in, and I can't get used to not having it. My brain just doesn't want to accept that it's gone. If you put it back, I'll forget that it was ever gone and we can put this whole thing behind us!

Exactly this! This game has the best soundtrack of any game I have ever played - by a significant margin. Not being able to skip the less notable songs and play those amazing musical compositions more frequently is a true loss.

I don't understand the hate and dislike of the eve music, its atmospheric and it fits and I think it sounds great. To many cry baby little girls that like to ***** and complain.

In fact I would like to see more tracks, the log in music for retribution is dead sexy and we need more, MOAR I say!

Agree most are cry babies but, some decent music would make my Eve so much better.

Why did you link to that video with that God awful horrible noise then? EVE music is great, why would you want something less good instead? I don't get it. Ugh

The old jukebox constantly ignoring your ambient track choices with combat techno was bad enough, but at least there I could revert the change with a few short clicks. Taking out the jukebox completely is throwing out the baby with the bathwater. You'd think after interacting for nearly a decade with a playerbase obsessed with customizing their gameplay experience, "taking away player control = BAD THING" would be obvious by now. Removing the jukebox option has forced me to run downloaded EVE ambient music through a third party media player while shutting off the music in game, which is just ridiculous.

Cant stand that combat techno music. Reminds me of the terribad soundtrack of the original mortal kombat movie from 95.
Like others have said, sliders all the way down and havent looked back. WTB jukebox! /sad panda face

Needs the ultimate ambient mad libs.
A menu you launch in esc that gives you the situation flags, and you fill in your mp3(s) of choice per situation. When unselected it defaults to built in music, when more than one is impute, it randomizes.
Map music, station music, high low nul wh music. mission music. plug and play. What better than your play list you select actually being effected by the way you play.
Wouldn't that have been better than the jukebox and this system? It feels like we are only half way there.

I don't see the point in removing the jukebox, yes a lot of people didn't use it (including myself, I rock Winamp like a boss) but the ability to do custom playlists was a neat feature and one of those "CCP actually gets it" moments compared to other games with no such feature.

Soundcloud or whatever is great but could they at least make the music available as an mp3 download pack? Heck, call it a Christmas gift. I see they're still available in the program directory as AmbientXXX but it doesn't have the name and I don't want to register for what sounds like a Pandora knockoff that doesn't like my browser. Or just bring the jukebox back, it wasn't hurting anything being there...

I agree, the removal of the jukebox was really not necessary. The entire point of it ever being added to the game if you will remember is that people were sick of listening to the same damn soundtracks over and over. They wanted to customize eve to play the way THEY wanted and not CCP. Removing this feature is a huge fail on CCP's part. If you arent removing ship spinning then its taking the ability to customize our music out of the game.

I understand how the new dynamic music system works, but really you could have left the jukebox in to have a user over ride that function if they wished to. i am disappointed in CCP's lack of thought in relation to this function. Please look into re-instating the jukebox feature and not just add a button to turn music off. We want OUR music, not run a third party program to get it. I should be able to listen to my own choice in music within the client and not seek it somewhere else.

I had my music stopped before the patch went through and the slider turned all the way down. Now when I turn up the music volume nothing even happens. And now even if my music was working I can't select my favorite song; Times of Sanguinity.

Why would you remove a perfectly working feature???? Baffles me.
