The Gila, Worm and Rattlesnake are all Guristas ships, not Caldari.
The Scorpion is allegedly a Caldari reverse-engineering of a Guristas design: in that light, the fact that the Scorp and it's Black (ops) Widow variant "don't fit" the naming scheme or design aethetics is pretty appropriate.

Yup. I know about the winged Chimera variation, but oddly could find no reference or pictures for it, but I'll back you up.

That totally fits the Gurista 'desert predator' naming then so it's not so odd after all. I had forgotten about the 'history' of the Scorpion.

Mayhaps they should rename the Widow as widowMAker or Black Widow. It is a weird anomaly for surre.

'Chimera' really means "combination of creatures". The most common one you'll see in D&D or Games Workshop is a eagle-headed lion with a snake's tail: sometimes, you get three headed versions where the heads are all different. Sometimes you'll see chimera applied to any wierd-ass mutant thing (like the lobstrocities from The Dark Tower, or the wyld-tainted Lunars in Exalted). Those things can be anything from winged cats to misshapen blobs of eyes and teeth.

IRL, a fair few GM crops and microbes are described as 'chimerical', because their genetic code is a mix of different species.

Widows aren't even a animal (well, human beings are). A widow is a woman who has lost her husband by death and has not remarried.

There is, however, widow spiders but widow doesn't really make me think of spiders.

I'm stepping out on a limb here, but maybe they were thinking of Black Widow spiders and a mistake in naming was somehow made. That's all I can figure.

Also, the jury is still out on Worm- Desert Predator as well, as worms are not really desert creatures (unless, of course, one lives on Arrakis). Smile

EDIT: Apparently, wyrm is Old English for a European-style dragon.

Maybe it's a never corrected error in spelling. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_dragon

It's under the Terminology heading.

But this still misses the desert angle for Gurista Ships.

There is a simple and effective mod for this problem with EVE ships, the camera and the normal mapping, as well as the entire graphical look of the game... it's easy to do, and it really improves the resolution of all the models and the game in general, nvidia should consider this when making new cards and such and CCP shouldn't have to do a thing to impliment it as it can be done on the client side 100%.... it's called: zoom-out.

Increasing program complexity and maintainability -- plus having to spend man-hours on this both in the art and coding department to make it happen in the first place -- is a bad idea.

No, all they have to do is release the textures in higher resolution (they already have high-res source art) and add an option to the texture quality drop-down menu of "Ultra" after "High".

This is not to say that the man-hours needed to save all of those textures in high-res is insignificant, but it is definitely a worthy investment. Currently the textures are just too low-res to stand to scrutiny up-close. Titans are particularly bad for this.

Well, cap ships are next to be V3'd so let's hope.

I hope they make the Charon and Rhea look not quite so boring.

I easily can tell you the difference between new scorp and the old one.
Where is the funkying difference between ravens?

The model is actually quite different in terms of detail. It's just difficult to see it with a single perspective.

Here is a better example

Raise your graphics settings above 'none' or 'low', for starters.

I didn't take those screens. ;) Pulled them off image search.

Perhaps post the new Standard Raven instead of the BadCamo Faction Raven for contrast purposes. It looks horrible enough in itself (although I do use mine, I can't stand to look at that camo).

EDIT: all my searches for the V3 Standard Raven turned up nothing as well. Certainly did not expect that. There are tons of the Old Raven and BadCamo Raven. Didn't expect this to turn into a search project.

Maybe nobody uses the Standard Raven's anymore ?

Its called a Manticore.

Either way Chimera is becoming less of an animal and more of a word to describe animals such as a griffon or the manticore.

Dust 514's CPM 1 Iron Wolf Saber Eve mail me about Dust 514 issues.

I've also found chimera misused in movie and TV dialogue to mean any kind of mysterious creature...or phenomena !

EDIT: I can't type today apparently

Earlier we were looking for a pic of the V3 Standard Raven, but all we can find online even with Google is the Faction Raven. You got ?
