Launcher crash help

Hi, just returned to the game, and unable to get the game to run via the launcher... I see a lot of posts like this, but made a new one because my problem seems to be unrelated to some of the other problems I have read about, ie error messages during repair or in-game crashes. My problem is that after downloading the new patch, my EVE never starts at all. Instead, I get what appears to be a tiny 'piece' of a message box that says EVE in the top left corner of my screen, and my computer tells me that EVE is unresponsive. It never launches at all, although I sometimes get the Inferno splash if I clean out the repair cache.

I've tried redownloading, repairing, clearing caches, launching eve.exe and the file from the eve/bin folder, but the game always acts the same, in that it doesn't act...

Does my problem sound similar to anyone else's experiences? Thanks.

A little more information about what happens...

If I start up EVE and I've set the launcher not to open unless there is a new update, then the launcher doesn't open and 'EVE' appears as a link in the taskbar. When I click on the minimized link it will occasionally maximize, but only into a 'corner' of a screen that says EVE. If I manually expand this screen it is entirely white.

I've got Windows XP, I know that there are some specific problems associated with this. However, because of some restrictions on my computer, I can't update to a different version of Windows. Can anyone help me figure out why my game isn't running? I can't even go to the log in screen, it's just unresponsive, though apparently it is completely updated.

Thanks!
