Hello my second favorite dev behind Punkturis.

Last time I heard you speak about things you were working on, you mentioned Client Side performance improvements and the changes to how your character's information is stored on the cluster. I can't remember all the details behind what you were discussing, but it was the whole 'brain in a box' thing where part of it's purpose was to help marginalize jump lag.

Any chance we'll be hearing an update to the progress of these projects? I know you said it was going to be a TON of work so I don't expect that they'll be done tomorrow. Just an update :)

I'm right here! (Well, I was working, but Punkturis let me know this thread existed so there's that)

The client stuff went well; that was wrapped up over the summer. A lot of smoothness improvements and some good FPS gains as well - nothing amazingly earth-shattering, and it's hard to notice "it's a bit smoother" but it's there I promise!

I got started on Brain in a Box shortly after that, and ended up frustrated enough with the underlying system that I started redoing it from scratch. That got moved into hobby-project land though in favor of some more pressing concerns, so progress has been slow. I'm hoping for some nice calm time around the holidays and the beginning of the next release to make some headway there~

Thanks for the response. I miss your blogs, they're usually full of all kinds of nerd pr0ñ.

It'd be nice to see some improvements on the jump mechanics. I can't imagine that doing things like the new bounty system and crimewatch is good for the jump mechanics as it's adding more to it. However, I could be wrong and due to it being new code instead of the legacy that it's actually improved it. I guess time will tell :).

On the client side stuff, I was hoping for some improvements for large fleet fight stuff. Specifically, the way brackets interact with engagements is pretty painful. Potentially a re-work on how those are 'categorized' would help so that we can have more obvious control over what's viewed.

Anyway, thanks for your work man. Always cool hearing what you and your team is up to.

Really sad to hear this. You just totally crushed all my hope. :( Currently everytime we undock our fleets, do our jumps there is this incredible lag spike and darkness envelopes us all and then everytime I think back to your presentation at fanfest about brains and boxes and I see a slimmer of hope at the end of all that darkness.

They're a drop in the bucket compared to all the processing that happens because of the skills in your brain. It bugs me constantly how heavy that is ><

It's great to hear people are still looking forward to that problem being solved. While it's an interesting technical problem, I wouldn't be working on it in my spare time if it wasn't a real problem for you duders.

It's a HUGE issue dude.

EDIT: In fact, 'Black Screens' have begun to make a triumphant return and people on weaker connections get dropped very often during session changing.

same

I have a new issue (i have a fantastically awesome rig) where I have trouble loading grid after jump, or exiting warp on a gate grid.

People have no idea how impactful this is. Through this initiative, if everyone's jumps on just normal gates were sped up by even a second, this could have a large impact. In the region I call home, there were approximately 24,000 jumps in the past 24 hours hours. That would save around 7 hours play time for the players involved. Imagine a 30 jump roam, that's another half minute of your life back, for every single gang member. And in populated systems, you're talking huge performance increases.

I think this is one of the most pressing problems we have, especially for newbies. New players see how much time it takes to travel from system to system, but at least in warp you can chat in local or do things in the game. In between gates, you're just dealing with dead air, basically. And when you get a black screen or just empty space, that's another 3-4 minutes of your life restarting the client and/or waiting.

I'm hoping that someone can supply you resources if you need them to complete this important project.

Here is an idea, You devs should make a page with all your portraits with ISD and CSM on one page, and on that page it shows what you do for CCP. CCP prides its self (I believe) on its customer interaction. It would be nice to know which Dev did what for Eve to award accolades..it could go both ways thou, just an idea.

edit: make it a page you can vote on, we can all vote for our favorite dev, isd, csm.

just a Q. Why doesn't one server just pass the state of your brain to the next server if there is a session change? Wouldn't this have lower mid-term maintenance and scale better as offloading the skill computation to a dedicated server?

how to fix eve: 1) remove ECM 2) rename dampeners to ECM 3) add new anti-drone ewar for caldari 4) give offgrid boosters ongrid combat value
