I'm not disagreeing with you as to his acting capabilities, but he is no Khan.

Sorry for the derail, but I actually loved the guy in "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" even if his part was short. I actually enjoyed the film, but him as a villain, well. Might be a bit for him, or perhaps not.

But ... I just wish if they decide to remake Khan, he´s as strong as the original.

As a lateral-thinker, I believe that Alice Eve is in this picture as Khan's genetically modified right hand girl.

Reason: she has heterochromia, and that gives a certain 'difference' to how she would be perceived in the eyes of the audience.

Pun intended.

Gary Mitchell is kind of a dumb villain to be bringing back.

Highly unliely.

Besides, why do people want nothing but an exact re-tread of where we have most famously been before.

To me it would smack of a Quickie Cash Grab of a movie, and for one, I would not patronize it.

That's a statement, now explain why it is dumb.

Can't speak for him, but many have reservations about it for two reasons. First, they think his story can only be done by basicly redoing the old TOS episode. Secondly, because in TOS he was a friend of Kirk in the acadamy, but in the little we saw about the academy in the new movie he clearly wasn't. Bringing him from nowhere as a best friend of Kirk would be hard to swallow. The common objections seem to stem from people being so closely tied to the details presented in TOS, that they think the makers of the new movies are somehow restricted by them. If they go with Mitchell, he will likely just be a guy with a personal connection to Kirk and obtains superpowers. All other details will be thrown out the window as they see fit.

Apparently not. That is obviously him on Earth, and he never gained his superpowers until after he boards the Enterprise...and they did not return to Earth before he was killed.

So no, it's not going to be a remake of the episode.

I doubt we're going to get an exact re-tread if the synopsis is anything to go by, but humouring you for the briefest...because based on what the recent 2009 movie was like, I think most are happy to trust them to make it a worthy nod to the original story of the 60's.

Additionally, stories about genetic engineering are palatable science fiction because of what we have done as humans in this area over the last, what?, 40 years?

It's been in the news, we've seen discussions, arguments and even capitalistic attempts to patent the human genome - so, it's sci-fi with weight behind it.

Easy.

Americans will always use Brits as the bad guy as Brits sound like they are actually educated. We can't have such things in America anymore, doncha know ?

Admittedly blokes always seem smarter because of the accent. 5 minutes or more with said bloke reveals otherwise, though I spare myself the trouble and simply look at how the UK is managed.

Sorry; that's a bovine fecal matter argument. It's like me assuming that all citizens of the USA are stupid, selfish, greedy and grasping, right-wing fundametalist, arrogant AND servile at the same time (quite an achievement) childish inebriates with a plastic surgery fixation and delusions of musical talent ("Let the Eagle Soar" my left buttock) just by looking at the way the country is run.

On second thoughts carry on, nothing to see here.

edit:- just had to come back and put the link to john Ashcroft's masterpiece in. Enjoy EVE; your understanding of what music can be will never be the same again.

I am American born in Arkansas and have lived in the diverse populations of Houston, TX, San Francisco, and Tampa/St Petersberg, Florida.

If you assume the above, you unfortunately do not assume wrong, sad to say.

edit: the amount of any kind of intelligent discourse in the States is rare, but would happen occasionally in San Fran, as is to be expected.

A few of us are trying to keep the intellectual torch alive, but it's become in the last 5 years or so a Losing Battle. It's REAL bad here. Florida is a mental cesspool tbh. Backwards as backwards can get.

I understand your perception of the issues folks my have here with the GAry Mitchell idea. But then the last ST movie most definitely broke with cannon, and I get the 'vibe' that the ST community (and the casually interested general public) have embraced the fact that it's going to be totally different.

Not making Gary Mitchell a friend of Kirk at the Academy is a really easy change tbh.

Hey fellow Trek fans! First up, can I just ask people to steer clear of the nationalist talk, it never ends well and ruins many a good thread, thank you.

Now to be on topic, take a look at these two pictures:

Elizabeth Dehner played by Sally Kellerman.

Alice Eve as "Unnamed Character"

I don't think its a stretch to imagine that Eve's character is Dr Elizabeth Dehner, albeit a retconned version. And lets face it, though many people would be OK with seeing Khan re-imagined, it does not fit with any of the facts released thus far by Paramount. The description released by them for the movie clearly states that Starfleet and Earth are threatened from within Starfleet itself.

Khan was never a part of Starfleet and, clever though he was, even in the original TV series and Movies he was never able to do more than attack from the outside. And while he was also undoubtedly dangerous, Khan was never considered a "One-man weapon" by anyone. He was a leader of men, not a solo killing machine.

Mitchell on the other hand would be perfectly capable of doing precisely these things; from infiltrating Starfleet, to going on a revenge fuelled spree of destruction. He has plenty of reasons (in his own mind) to hate Starfleet and James Kirk, and with his new abilities he would be more than capable of wreaking massive amounts of destruction. Consider his powers:

- Hypercognition
- Conscious regulation of autonomic reflexes
- Telepathy
- Extrasensory perception of various kinds, including clairvoyance, clairaudience, and clairoratory
- Telekinesis
- The ability to control energy, including both its directed use as a weapon against other organisms, and an invulnerability to Phaser fire
- The ability to manipulate matter, including the instant materialization and dematerialization of both organisms and objects

That gets him into Starfleet headquarters, the ability to re-program peoples thoughts, create weapons out of thin air and be able to withstand weapons fire. Pretty handy if you plan on destroying a whole planet in a fit of bare-fisted rage, don't you think?

Highly assumptive - and since Gary only encountered the esp changing moment when he left the galaxy edge...this would mean a whole chunk of necessary film time devoted to:

a) traveling to the outside of the galaxy.
b) Gary before, during and after transformation into the God-like person.
c) general character development with the who what why and when elements needed for empathy or hatred by the audience
d) traveling back from the edge of the galaxy
e) emo-time for ragequitting starfleet
f) subsequent rejection from reality of reasoning
g) boobies

So, you gotta shove all that BS into the script and plot development somehow.

With Khan and his cohorts, you got one sentence: he's a genetically engineered superhuman, Jim...and he's crazier than a Kansas City racehorse at the final furlong. boom, we got it.

Out of interest in this thread, I did watch the original episode and I 'ave to say it's a little tooooo emo for me: I'm afraid of breaking things so I hate myself and break things anyway.

Anyway...the trailer is out - and it rocks

BTW, the trailer had probably the most explosions I've seen in quite awhile.

But the lens flares were indeed absent Smile

EDIT:I can't find the article, but it was about how the level of lens flares in the last film was partly ILM's doing.

They saw all the lens flares in the finished Bridge shots and all, and they took the cue and made the effects shots also be lens flare heavy. It just compounded the issue and JJ Abrams said it wasn't quite supposed to be like that.

People are saying Garth of Izar as well :S

Khan should be a no: He's on the Botany Bay in the 21st Century or shortly after in Stasis, he lands some are dead, he's found tries to take over the enterprise and some die, he gets left on a planet setting up the movie - The planet encounters a massive shift altering it's condition to inhospitable.

He dies in the film.

Khan is landlocked the entire time.

The War-Zone planet is the clue to the real identity, and the japanese trailer is rumoured to have a spoiler.

Mitchell would be a good choice, and lol: galactic edge is a boundary.... 60's for ya.

I find the Star Trek fan base fascinating they are crazy die hard and extremely protective of the series and everything pertaining to it. Almost as if it wasn't SciFi and was future history being told in the past. :)

Let's not assume that they're going to restrict themselves to TOS villains.

For all we know it could be the Dominion sending in changelings. The Romulans also have a history of espionage as well. Or heck, attacking the Earth? That's the Xindi all the way.

Heck, they could bring V'ger back, or Nomad. Special effects have got to the point where the Gorn have the potential for coolness too. Do I even need to mention the Klingons?

And let's face it, if there was every a character who fans had a love/hate relationship it was Q.
