Could be a lump of earth held together with grass, but in this context it's probably one of the other main uses of the word.

Sod is an English colloquialism that is originally an abbreviation of sodomite, which I'm pretty sure most folk will know the meaning of.

However, it's very rarely used in it's literal form these days and has become a general catch all "softcore" insult for when you don't want to upset folk too much by using any of the big no-no words.

Most swear filters won't pick it up and it's generally not considered that rude in normal conversation.

It's a bit like "bugger", which means exactly the same thing originally but has devolved into another nothing-in-particular term of light abuse through decades of common usage.

A good example might be something like, "I got two sodding likes for my stolen mother-in-law joke y'bugger, and I wasn't even fishing for them".

To which a standard reply might be "Sod off Jago, you pretentious bugger", or possibly "Bugger off Jago you pretentious sod".

There are also other ways of using sod and bugger. Things can be "sodding awful" (an indeed frequently are) and things that might not be working like they should are often described as "buggered" 'cos it's a little bit more polite than "******".

Bugger has even warped into a term of endearment, particularly in the North tha knows. Strange language.
