Together with all the extremely good examples above, and in addition to the Space Opera genre, and disregarding the kerxplosions and all that, adding the tenseness of battle, some personal drama, and stuff, either the multi-thousand ship space battles from Legend of the Galactic Heroes saga, or the POV from a minor ship in also huge space battles on the Crest and Banner of the Stars saga.

Riders in the Skies is pretty high on my list. I daresay I enjoy the fight between Haman and Quattro more than Kamille settling the score with Scirocco.

Brian Blessed makes everything better.

If this was a list of the worst sci-fi space battles, Battle Beyond the Stars would have to get a mention.

Sig blah blah blah blah

Movie: Serenity

Don't forget the Deep Space Nine battles. I am not sure if they are really the best space battles ever, but they are definately awesome.

I'd like to apologize for the poor quality of the post above and sincerely hope you didn't waste your time reading it. Yes, I do feel bad about it.

Your all time greatest space battle in Sci-Fi.

Restricting it to films, video games, and TV shows so that awesome youtube videos can be posted.

My personal favourite visually is from Mass Effect 3.

SPOILER WARNING

As much as i hate that game's ending, i am hard-pressed to think of more bombastic spacebattles. Even DS9's battles lack that kind of impact, though the main battle between allied and dominion forces comes close.

Edit: @CCP: Next trailer. Use that to just grind all those others into dust.

If you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all...
