What am I not understanding about kill rights?

Got jumped by a gate camp by a pair of guys in low sec, no big deal. Didn't fire back. Don't have kill rights on either of them. What am I missing?

You don't get killrights for ship destruction in low-sec. You do get killrights for pod destruction in low-sec.
