FW Faction Standings and Pirate Factions Standings.

yo,
according to this website - http://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Factional_Warfare#Being_promoted_by_the_FW_corp - every time you get promoted for doing FW missions you gain standings with the factions you're allied with, and lose standings with factions that are at war with your militia.

My question is, do promotions also decrease corresponding standings with the pirate factions ?

Yes, gaining standing with a specific Faction will affect your standing towards all the other factions, including the Pirate Factions.

Another option besides joining FW is 'The Plan'.
