I get that this has been re-prioritised along with everything else, and that it is now a low priority for CCP compared with FiS. Which is a good thing.

It's starting to look like Incarna will never be realised to the extent that was originally promised.

As one of the players who was looking forward to Incarna (not what we currently have, but the one with actual stuff to do). I'm pissed off, mainly because the feature which has been promised for years (and years), that I have been looking forward to, doesn't seem like its going to happen.

Can we actually get some sort of Dev Blog on this? What is the new scope for Incarna? Is it back in the 'coming soon' category?

Hopefully never. It doesn't fit in EVE, and provides zero value-add.

I think we'll get the rest of racial CQs, some basic (limited number of players) congregation area for showing off monocles and stuff... and that' would be all, pretty much. Because CCP has no capacity to do what they wanted to, not even remotely.
The first item is the only thing that will be delivered in under a year. The rest of that crap is not so important. CCP should just be done with the racial CQ and leave Incarna alone forever.

So I think a good clue to the priority of WiS and some of the things that scuttled it are that instead of reassigning folks from WoD to WiS they were let go and WoD is on life support. If WiS mattered (or could even be done with most current hardware with the engine they chose) the WoD folks would have been put on WiS as part of the refocus.

What I think happened we CCP started to realize that the character animation engine they bet the farm on was great for a simple single character cloth demonstration but could never scale to true massively multiplayer using any hardware known to man. They REALLY screwed up on the technology path they chose.

When I was in the CSM and meeting the devs I was really interested in seeing how "graphics savy" the devs I encountered were. I came from that space profesionally and have meet the smartest folks in the world in regards to 3D graphics. Lets just say I understood why when I was involved in working on the next generation of grahics technology CCP was never one of the companies we talked about meeting with. Graphics is not their thing.

They bet huge on a gamble to make them "best in class" but didn't have the experience to realize what they wanted to do couldn't scale or be commercially deployable any time soon. In fact the trends in the PC industry make it even less likely that most future PCs would be any better at really being able to support what they intended to deliver (PC graphics in most common PCs are pretty stagnent, yes, you can see better and better add in cards but the fact is integrated chipsets are the most common and the market is telling most manufacurers that they are "good enough").

So my guess is that WiS should be considered DOA unless CCP decides to reset and start again with different base technologies. Given that the loudest of the player base seem the hate WiS that seems pretty unlikely.

Repeating that like a mantra doesn't exactly make it true.

For Winter we're getting the 3 other CQs, which should be pretty damn awesome.
Before the redirection, we would have gotten establishments.

Perhaps we'll get them next Summer?

no - if they were that near, they'd release it anyway.

Hellmar interview with Eurogamer more or less answers the OP's question. For the most part, it seems like Incarna might be put aside for quite some time.

Only thing what you really need to know about incarna...

The original tech demo was "awesome".
The end product was "crap".

If Incarna development continues in some point, there needs to be more original concept for it to be accepted as a whole.

Then why can't CCP ******* man up and just say that there will be no new Incarna stuff for a long time. This is all I'm wanting, some certainty.

^^ this

And the funny bit follows:-

99% of those saying that WiS is a waste yadda yah will be the first through "the door" when it's eventually finished.

When they go through "the door" they'll also realise they look like dags and will race back to CQ to get dressed with... you guessed it... NeX items....

I am saving up my best flames/trolls for that very day Twisted

Jade is right ofc, CCP didnt really have a plan for real EVE style gameplay within the full body avatar environment, and more importantly, they never leveraged EVE gameplay into incarna features.

Some time ago I started this thread on what I would like to see. Although admittedly, the prospects look very bleak lol.

I'm calling it.

Incarna is dead.

Here is why

Haters, feel free to pleasure yourselves over a print out of that interview.

To all those who were looking forward to WiS, welcome to EVE online, here is your spaceship (which is all you will ever get), go **** yourself.

Yep.

The sad bit here is CCP believes the playerbase doesn't want station environments when the reality is they simply don't want to be pigeonholed into a one-room closet.

The concept isn't garbage, the implementation was just horrible. it would be a shame to see the technology go to waste.

I've said it before. If you joined a game for wiggly little appendages in a game that doesn't have them, then you've joined the wrong game.

That said, out of 400 CCP employees, CCP should be able to find 1 team of 10 people to continue working on the technology to the point where incarna's not a developmental deadend. Everything I've heard and seen about incarna since the switch to the WoD engine indicated that it has always been a deadend. Which means we have the crappy new avatars for no reason.

Main line from that interview to take note of, in terms of answering the op's question is this one,

"Hilmar Pétursson: We're releasing the racial variants of the Captain's Quarters this year and that's mainly because we had that work completed. It also includes some optimisations and other fixes. I think the community has spoken loud and clear that they want more classical Eve features to come out, and that's the priority for us. Incarna is there, and we might pick it up at some point later down the line, but the voice of the community is quite clear. People want more spaceships, and more flying in space features. That's very much what we are responding to. "

This is what ***** me about CCP. They can't just come out and say. No incarna for 12 months/2 years/whatever. They always use this non-specific language full of 'might' and 'possibly'.

Have some ******* honesty CCP. There are voices in your community that do want the original vision you promised for Incarna. You could at least be honest with us.

It was a cool idea but implemented poorly. The graphics engine needs to be toned down so we can interact with other players in stations. But this has zero game play and only social aspects. Hopefully it is gone for a long time.

I was thinking recently that they could put the WiS bit on hold and work on a feature where you can board sleeper structures to complete a mission/ collect cool tech/ solve a puzzle/ do other Uber things

At least that would be fun, add gameplay, a be better use of the Incarna engine.

What do you think?
