Young players definately shouldn't feel bad about being popped by sansha rats and wondering wtf is going on. Back when incursions first came out lo sec (where sanshas spawn on gates) was littered with vet wrecks as no one had really believed the sansha would own them.

I believe it was 5000 ships destroyed in one day. Shiny ships, too.

The #1 dominant line of thinking before people knew what they were doing was "My Navy Raven can handle every L4 I throw it in! Surely no mere rat can stop me!"

And when the new A.I. comes into effect all rats will respond like this. Although turned down a bit.

If a sansha gate camp can own veteran PVPers, how is a noob mission runner supposed to fight mission rats that are equally smart?

Only time will tell...

Well to start with.

New players are running level one missions in their frigates.

Not much "switching targets" when there is only 1 frigate in the pocket to target.

The only real new AI feature there is, is that NPC's will switch aggro. This means it isn't possible to fully AFK mission with a drone boat. It will also mean that first jumping in a Tanking ship to grab all aggro and then warp in the gun will not work anymore.

AI has nothing to do with the power of their guns. The new AI also responds no different from the old AI when there is a single target (player) present.

So, no, the new AI would make literally no difference in this situation, or that of warping into an asteroid belt after Retribution. The only time it starts making a difference is if a) there are multiple people present, or b) you have drones.

This is something I'm waiting for. Not real fun to run lvl 4's w/ carebear corp-mates when all you do is fly in with your frig or destroyer a blast stuff, knowing the BS has full aggro. It's like mining at high speed. Now, I'll be a more active participant running those.

Nearly all hisec systems have some low level NPC pirate presence.

I'm fairly sure there are no rats in 1.0 or 0.9 sec.

The exact cutoff is supposed to be true-sec 0.85. I don't recall whether 0.85 has belt rats and 0.86 doesn't, or if 0.85 is rat-free but 0.84 has them. A couple of years ago I found a system that had no good refinery (but did have at least on station) and which was exactly at the cut-off so it was rat-free, and it turned out to be a fairly good place for small-scale mining. I found it using Ombey's 2D Maps, which shows the true-sec rating with two decimal places.

Also, the 0.85 thing is during normal play. I don't know if an ongoing Incursion changes things.

Lesson here: avoid incursions for now?

I think the lesson is: Don't mine in belts during Incursions, and don't go ratting in belts during Incursions. Also don't do Combat or Mining missions during Incursions (Courier ones are fine). When there's an Incursion on, CCP wants you to fight the Incursion, or stay docked (or fly between stargates and stations).

(I don't know how Incursions affect exploration sites, such as gravimetric mining sites.)

Basically:

Incursions replace any rat that spawns in the system.

So if normally the location would have NPC rat spawns (asteroid belts for instance in high-sec) they are now replaced with Incursion rats.

As in low-sec and null-sec rats also spawn at gates and stations, they too are replaced.

The ai will change but the stats are staying the same. Who cares if the rat is really clever if it only dos 15 dps. Incursion rats owned because they did far more effective damage than normal rats, had far better defences AND had the fancy AI. To give you an idea a single incursion frigate can put out 300 dps.

This is true except incursion gate spawns are far far more common than normal rate gate spawns. Generally an incursion system will have rats on half its gates at any one time.

As well as spawning rats in belts in 0.9 systems (for clarification, 0.9 systems do not have rats outside of incursions, correct?)
