Ah, well that explains it (somewhat). I had read enough to know to be careful with jet cans and such, and haven't even messed with them yet. I did notice the notification in the top left about an incursion, but had (and pretty much still have) no idea what that really means.

So basically a group of NPCs was attacking the system I was in, and wasn't happy with me mining their asteroids?

Lesson here: avoid incursions for now?

Thanks again for all the input.

I'm thinking a good next step for me would be to join a training corporation. Would something like Eve University be a wise idea?

Certainly, but just asking questions here or in-game help chat works too :D

Make sure to try the links I edited in to my last post, give you an idea of the scale and backstory.

It was an incursion.

You tried to mine in a system that was currently under siege by the Sansha. You should have seen the system was a eerie green, and a big system control status on the left. When the Sansha do an incursion they take over an entire constellation and attack with much stronger and smarter NPCs than normally found in belts or missions. They override the rule that rats dont spawn in 0.9 or 1.0 systems an essentially render all belts in the effected systems unmineable. In lowsec they even camp the stargates.

Fun fact: Before Incursions came out as a game feature there were several live events where sansha invaded a few key systems and abducted millions of people from the planets. They were integrated to be more Sansha cyborgs and the NPCs you see in Incursions have names that correspond with the system their crew was abducted from.

You can see videos of these invasions on youtube (try the invasion of Deltole) as well as watch the Incursion trailer and a CIDA video profile on Sansha Kuvakei, leader of the Sansha

Stupid US (older players) for not thinking about Incursions.

Which indeed was the case and also why there were belt rats in a 0.9 systems.

HOWEVER

Xer...Even if he did spot the more green looking backgrounds, or the Incursion chat, or the Incursion siege bar.

He is a new player, so he wouldn't know what it all means, let alone what an incursion is. Which is what got him killed (kind of).

He know knows and great advice here.

General: E-Uni is good.

Personally: I would stay away from E-Uni and look for a smaller group of players that are new player friendly and willing to teach you the game. Why: Because EVE Uni has a huge amount of players joining so there can be a waiting queue to get in, they have a good amount of rules about what you can and can't do (specially during wars), cause they are big, they tend to attract the wrong type of players too (awoxers) and most importantly, they are big which means less personal interaction. I would rather be in a smaller corp that doesn't take on new players in big numbers but rather takes on a couple and have quality over quantity in the methods.

Add me to the list of new players who wandered into an Incursion without knowing enough about them.

I ran a courier mission to Halle and saw the warning info about an Incursion but did not understand the possibilities. I picked up a mining mission that I thought would be a quick & easy task in the same system. I warped to an asteroid belt and was 1-shotted by a Sansha BS while changing to a mining Overview tab. Scratch one Thrasher Shocked I hung around in my capsule long enough to grasp what happened then ran for safety [I should have done that faster. The shot might have come from a player who wanted to add a pod to the kill list].

This thread and the posts in it have helped me understand what happened. I did not know about the combat/losses info in the player window. So some good has come from a bad surprise Smile. I have spent some time reviewing what I found in the losses log. I had forgotten one of them [you know you are a newb when you can still remember almost all the ships you have lost].

I put my plans to get a cruiser on hold as I replace my destroyer and fit it. I took the opportunity to try an Amarr ship, a Coercer. So far I am liking it, especially the sleek look.Cool

And now, back to another day in the neighborhood

To give you new players some satisfaction, it's not only the new players who don't understand Incursion mechanics.

A while back (early 2012) I was in null-sec and we were deployed in the Russian Civil War.

We had the task to flip a station to our owner ship. The issue was, the system where the station was in was under Incursion control (means no capitals can be used but also means a lot of hard rats on gates).

I was already in system couple of days prior to scout stuff etc.
So then the day of shooting came, and Drake after Drake jumped the gate solo, together with stealth bombers and tier 3's. Cause they all came in on their own, each and every single one got scrammed by the Gate rats and was turned into space junk pretty soon after.

So, you new players aren't the only ones who can be surprised by Incursion rats.

Indeed.

The fun part about it was just that I was sitting cloaked off a gate and warned them MULTIPLE times about the Incursion + scramming rats etc.

But was just one chain of lemmings all jumping into their death.
So after couple of warnings, I gave up and just sat there and laughed with each ship going down

I was exploring in an incursion system some months back (highsec). The comments in local (from a player who was a year or two old) went something like:

"What are all these sites here?"
"Fine, I'll look for myself"
"Damn, they got my Drake. Damn them, I'll show them!"
... little bit later ....
"My new Raven! !#@@$%#$!@ bastards killed my new Raven!"

1 jump away! Granted I was not actually working on a mission, I just wanted to try out my new mining lasers and thought that was a safe place. Now I know better :)

Another thing about Incursions.

They CAN appear at any place in EVE (except Wormhole space) and are only temporarily.

Any Incursion will only last a maximum of 7 days (I believe, could be less) OR till when players destroy the mothership of the incursion.

So that system you got shot in, it can be very safe now. Just watch for the Incursion specific things (Incursion chat channel, Greenish background, Incursion progress bar) and if you see them move around a bit. Incursions will only affect a certain constellation (which usually are about 5 - 10 systems in total).

Just to say, as a Sansha RPer, this thread has made my day, so I have something to offer the OP.

Post the lossmail of the bantam onto eve-kill.

Post the link in this thread.

I will forward you (through an alt) a retriever in Dodixie that you can use when you can skill into it properly.

Too bad you can't post ANYTHING that only has NPC rats on it on EVE-kill.

To before you try to scam someone with something he can't do by any form, please think it through a bit better.

Not scamming, and I didn't know that.

I want to give this guy a retriever, but I want the killmail.

OP, you can send me a link with the killmail in game through EVEmail. That would do.

Hey all, brand new capsuleer here. I'd like to request some clarification on my situation and then some advice on how to avoid making similar mistakes in the future.

From what I've gathered online so far, it seems Mining is a decent way for newbies like myself to get started. So, after playing through the opening tutorial, I started working for the Industrial agent, and found myself with a shiny new Bantam mining frigate. Not knowing if it was a bad idea to remove my Miner I from my starter ship, I purchased two new ones on the market for what seemed like a pretty good deal. On my way back to my home station (had to make 3 jumps to pick up the new lasers) I decided to try out my new purchase in the "safe"(0.9) system I happened to be in. So I warped to the closest asteroid field I could find, but before I could even target the nearby Scordite, my ship exploded in my face.

Now for the stupid part: feeling frustrated with the loss of my new ship so soon, I thought maybe I could at least save the lasers I had just bought. Of course, as soon as I showed up again, my starter ship got the same treatment as the Bantam. Doh!

Now, from my understanding, 0.9 is supposed to be pretty safe. Was I just unlucky, or should I have been better prepared before trying to mine in 0.9?

I realize I'll get a free replacement for my Caldari starter ship, so should I just plan to mine with that now, once I find some new lasers? I bought insurance for the Bantam, but the payout was minimal compared to the cost to purchase a replacement on the market.

So, any advice on how to proceed and/or how to prevent future mistakes like this?

Thanks in advance!
