There was literally 1 video on youtube of the Tormentor, and that was in a failed badger gank. So I decided to share some recently made Tormentor 1 v 1 pvp vids. Duel repper Tormentor, lots of tank but no spank can make for some long fights.

There have been some fights vs kiting frigates where we had to call it a draw because I could rep all their dps on one repper, but couldnt get within scram range to apply any deeps..

Forgive some of my terrible mistakes like unessiarily running reps and letting stuff offline when running outa cap ( I use 200's now)

Enjoy!

A few reasons, I think:

  1. The Tormentor has only recently become viable to use in PvP -- and even now, it competes heavily with the tankier, no-drones, and cap-bonused Punisher
  2. Sort of because of #1, there is little good understanding of how to best make it work in PvP.
  3. Also because of #1, there will be many more old videos of other frigates in PvP than new ones of the Tormentor.
  4. The dual weapon setup (lasers+drones) is a turn-off for many.
  5. It's not very photogenic. In fact, for some people (including myself), it's just creepy. All I see is a creepy grinning thing. Sorry.

On another note, congratulations on the videos! They're looking great. From what I saw of the fights, you may want to look up info on:

  • The advantages/disadvantages of buffer/active tanking. Personally I prefer the Tormentor buffer tanked, but it may just be personal preference.
  • Tracking, how it works, and how to mitigate poor tracking. Your lasers were missing most of the times in those videos. Hitting "orbit" when you're in a laser ship is generally a bad idea because of lasers' really poor tracking. Try to fly in a straight line, or to keep a fair distance away. Your optimal range is amazing compared to other short range weapons. Take advantage of that.

Rock on!

Thanks for the advise. I was actually doing that orbiting completely manually and boy it it tough on my index finger. WTB spam left mouse click button! I had always wondered why I get some many misses so I'll try it out with some reduced transversal speed instead of going for a max transversal to reduce incoming damage.

*EDIT* BTW that smiling ship picture had me lol'ing.!

That's not a bad tactic, but it only really works when the transversal doesn't break your damage more. P

Decent fights.
Use navy 400s, they fit in small cap boosters.
And you have to stop shooting to swap crystals What?

keep it up.

+1, good tip.

Actually, pro tip here:

Right click on your guns to change crystals before turning them off (mouse), then turn the module off via keyboard (F1), pick the new crystal (mouse), and turn it back on (keyboard or mouse). It minimizes firing downtime and can confuse an enemy if you rapidly switch colors.

Never thought to do it that way. I get a little frantic in the heat of battle with it still being so new and very exciting (my hands still get shaky when things get tight!)

I will definitely try to do that when swapping crystals. Thanks!

You're welcome! It takes a little practice and cool head to get it right, but it's very effective, particularly if you're doing range control by continually swapping Scorch/Multifrequency or something. I've also used it on my beam lasers to swap from Aurora, to Standard, to Multifrequency/Gleam as my target closes in, doing optimal damage at all ranges and astonishing people with the damage output of beam lasers.

Remember this is also applicable to swapping module scripts, too! Particularly those tracking disruptors.

It is also mildly applicable to rails/blasters, but their swap time is 5 seconds, not instant. It also helps with missiles/projectiles, but the impact is much less (10 second ammo swap time).

I love that pic and keep going back to it. That drawling could pass for a cross between Earthworm Jim and Bender, haha.

If you look at the ship straight on, it bears a little resemblance to one of the aliens from the Aliens movies, before they open up the teeth and that separate set of choppers comes out to get ya..

Ok, tried to take some of your advise, open with the pro crystal swap even, lol.

6 min long fight with an ASB/Neut Slasher

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KhQq5kHRxU

Thanks again for the advise! I definetly saw the advantage of reducing transversal with some og my big hits. Still got some work to do but its a push in the right direction.

ASB/Neut is hard to beat in a Tormentor, especially once he blaps your drones. Question: I notice your fights are in hisec. Are these pre-arranged where the enemy knows what you will be fielding? If so, you might be disadvantaging yourself (there are high chances that Slasher had an EM Ward Field or something).

Anyway, keep at it! Your piloting looks much better. The more you fly, the more "tricks" you'll learn. For example, I have a piloting trick for my Punisher that stunned my corp mates when it turned a toe-to-toe Punisher vs Rifter fight into an easy win for the Punisher. Try different stuff, find new techniques, win!

I'm in Red vs Blue and was calling for 1 v 1's in local, which are honored. I'm sure he knew my fit because I had just got done beating a Blue Executioner only moments before the Slasher. I dont announce my fit before hand, but I'm beginning to think my little Tormentor is becomming known as everybody seems to always show up with a neut or a vamp. ;-)

It's all good though. IF I can beat something fitted specifically to counter my fit them more of a win for me. :-)

Well, it doesn't take much to guess that against a laser ship you should bring energy warfare. The good part is that your cap booster mitigates that a lot.

True. If you can beat people who are specifically fit to beat you, that's a huge win.
