Newbie request for clarification/advice

Hey all, brand new capsuleer here. I'd like to request some clarification on my situation and then some advice on how to avoid making similar mistakes in the future.

From what I've gathered online so far, it seems Mining is a decent way for newbies like myself to get started. So, after playing through the opening tutorial, I started working for the Industrial agent, and found myself with a shiny new Bantam mining frigate. Not knowing if it was a bad idea to remove my Miner I from my starter ship, I purchased two new ones on the market for what seemed like a pretty good deal. On my way back to my home station (had to make 3 jumps to pick up the new lasers) I decided to try out my new purchase in the "safe"(0.9) system I happened to be in. So I warped to the closest asteroid field I could find, but before I could even target the nearby Scordite, my ship exploded in my face.

Now for the stupid part: feeling frustrated with the loss of my new ship so soon, I thought maybe I could at least save the lasers I had just bought. Of course, as soon as I showed up again, my starter ship got the same treatment as the Bantam. Doh!

Now, from my understanding, 0.9 is supposed to be pretty safe. Was I just unlucky, or should I have been better prepared before trying to mine in 0.9?

I realize I'll get a free replacement for my Caldari starter ship, so should I just plan to mine with that now, once I find some new lasers? I bought insurance for the Bantam, but the payout was minimal compared to the cost to purchase a replacement on the market.

So, any advice on how to proceed and/or how to prevent future mistakes like this?

Thanks in advance!

Nearly all hisec systems have some low level NPC pirate presence. Just a few weak frigates, the kind you fought in the tutorial. Grab a Merlin and put some blasters or railguns, shields, and some other stuff on it, clear the belt, and then come in with your Bantam to mine.

Your Merlin could be equipped with the following:

Quote:

HIGH
3 x 75mm Gatling Railgun I

MEDIUM
1x Medium Shield Extender I
1x Stasis Webifier I
1x Small Shield Booster I
1x 1MN Afterburner I

LOW
1x Damage Control I
1x Magnetic Field Stabilizer I
1x Co-Processor I OR Micro Auxiliary Power Core I (depending on if you need more CPU or power grid)

This is just off the top of my head, and not verified that it actually fits using a fitting tool like Pyfa, so take it with a grain of salt.

Good luck!

Your new Ibis will have a civilian mining laser, but the quickest way to get a new freebie Bantam is to run the first two missions in either the Business or Exploration tutorial.

I'm fairly sure there are no rats in 1.0 or 0.9 sec.

Hmm... I was fairly certain that they spawned everywhere, with a few systems being exempt for anti-lag purposes (e.g. Jita, Rens, Amarr, etc). I can't seem to find any info supporting either of our stances, but then how could OP have gotten killed in 0.9 twice?

Click on your character portrait, click on 'combat log'. What killed you?

1.0 and 0.9 do not have belt rats. If the OP was mining in a 0.9 security system belt, then he must have been killed by a player. That would also explain why he didn't see it coming. Belt rats in high sec take a while to kill even an untanked frigate. I am sure that the OP would have figured out what was happening.

The solution is to find a quieter system. Most likely the 0.9 security system is a busy one, and someone was having fun that day ganking miners. OP: you are mostly safe in high-sec; however, if someone is willing to sacifice their ship, they can still kill you anywhere. All you can do is to try to avoid attention, and moving to an quiet system is a good way to start.

Either this pilot got suicide ganked or he was in space that didn't like him. I suspect he was killed by a local navy. In which case he needs to understand how his standing effect where he can go safely without the NPC navy being on his ass.

Like Elena said, we need to know what killed you, go check your character sheet for the loss. You can double click the entry to see full info about what ship you lost and who did what damage, etc but if you could paste us the text version of it that would be helpful. You should be able to click an icon at the top left of the killreport window that should give you the option to copy the text log for the kill.

Time to go back to school Mr ISD.

1.0 and 0.9 systems don't have Rat spawns on asteroid belts.

0.8 and lower has.

To OP:

1.) Are you sure it was 0.9, if it was lower it could be belt rats.

2.) Are you sure it wasn't another player shooting you (also possible).

Like said before, it helps to know what killed you:

Open your character sheet (click your portrait on left side) > Combat Log > Select "Show Losses" and right click/copy those losses into here.

It will show you where you were, what shot you, etc. etc.

EDIT:

CCP, please fix that damn subscribe button at the top. It's useless if you can't click it to subscribe and have to use the old school version to subscribe to threads.

Thanks for the replies, everyone!

I'm assuming I need to be in game to see the combat log, correct? I'm at work now, but I'll check it in a couple hours when I get home.

And yes, it was a very quick death. I had time to read something like "So-and-so's missile missed you completely" and then before I could figure out what was happening I was dead. I had no problem at all with the early NPCs I fought in the tutorials, so I assumed this was a player that killed me.

Yes you have to be in game to show your combat logs.

If it was another player, your loss hasn't been posted on EVE-kill yet.

EDIT:

Neither is any of the losses linked on Battleclinic either.

So what I suspect is:

A.) It wasn't a 0.9 system but something lower - though unlikely cause even 0.5 belt rats would take time to kill you.
B.) It could be another player, though nothing has been posted on the killboards as of yet.
C.) You shot something that you shouldn't have shot, CONCORD tried to make sure you didn't do it again. The 2nd time - cause you were that quick - you loaded grid while still GCC and CONCORD made sure you understand it the 2nd time.

I can't find the OP on any killboard (yet). Either it wasn't a player or the kills just haven't been posted.

Geez, I am on a really bad streak of being wrong today. Sad Sorry, all.

The lack of killboard posts for the loss, plus the near-instant death (plus 0.9 sec) indicates CONCORD. OP, make sure you didn't try to use actual guns on the asteroid. That is a crime punishable by getting blown up by the police.

I'm going to stop here before I say something more silly.

Okay it was me! Sorry gaw!

Highsec is owned by players now. Systems 0.5-1.0 are New Order Territory. All miners and other residents of Highsec must obey The Code. Mining without a permit is dangerous and harmful to the EVE community. See www.MinerBumping.com

So, was that two different players from the same corporation that killed me?

Still not entirely certain. Both of those characters still have 0.0 security status, which indicates that it probably was not a suicide attack. Also, neither of those characters are in True Power. True Power is the NPC corp for Sansha's Nation.

There is an active incursion taking place in Ekura. While 0.9 security systems do not normally have belt rats, during an incursion they might. Therefore I suspect that you were killed by some incursion rats. The other likely possibity is that those players might have tricked you into taking ore from their jet cans, then killed you.

Oh hahhahahaha

How could we have not thought of this!?

It was an incursion.

You tried to mine in a system that was currently under siege by the Sansha. You should have seen the system was a eerie green, and a big system control status on the left. When the Sansha do an incursion they take over an entire constellation and attack with much stronger and smarter NPCs than normally found in belts or missions. They override the rule that rats dont spawn in 0.9 or 1.0 systems an essentially render all belts in the effected systems unmineable. In lowsec they even camp the stargates.

Fun fact: Before Incursions came out as a game feature there were several live events where sansha invaded a few key systems and abducted millions of people from the planets. They were integrated to be more Sansha cyborgs and the NPCs you see in Incursions have names that correspond with the system their crew was abducted from.

You can see videos of these invasions on youtube (try the invasion of Deltole) as well as watch the Incursion trailer and a CIDA video profile on Sansha Kuvakei, leader of the Sansha
