This tweaking pretty much destroyed all of the equipment brought along with the colonists* and guaranteed the collapse of society as pretty much no one knew how to build anything more advanced than pointy sticks**.

*I'm talking about ludicrously advanced stuff like quantum computers, self replicating smart matter etc. Basic/incredibly rugged things like automated terraformers could survive (mostly) as the companies that bought them could have been too poor to buy the much weaker but much more advanced models. To put it simply, stuff that hasn't been built yet/ requires certain conditions in universe to work is fine for you to break. Stuff that's well understood however isn't, as it'd be pretty easy for someone to explain how it'd destroy the universe/kill every human.

Problem is that modern day electronics are shielded against human nuclear devices. The EVE gate explosion was a cosmic event, likely on the scale of a nova or supernova, unimaginably more powerful than anything we've set off before.

I think the rammifications of the EVE Gate collapse are being amplified in this thread.

Colonies existed on hundreds of worlds, this lowered over time, after more than 8000 years there were at least 12 individual survivor colonies of note, and hundreds more colonies that blend into the background population. Ealur survived for example.

The "canon" history is history according to the four "empires." Other civilizations including the Sleepers and the Jove apparently recovered faster.

The loss and rediscovery of advanced technology over thousands of years makes sense when you realize how much 21st century technology is dependent on worldwide economic and manufacturing networks. Even something like ENIAC required the specialized labor of thousands of people and dozens different raw materials, which in turn, required different kinds of raw materials to process. All of this requires extremely specialized knowledge and a good source of labor. And that was just to build one prototype computer.

And one could also assume that while the colonies were struggling for self sufficiency, those starship crews that probably remained were looking for subsistence, along with everyone else. Fiction suggests some of these leviathon ships never made planetfall, we see the evidence of them in wreckage.. They would be struggling for resources, too. The will to survive has been mentioned. How they might have managed is easily imagined.

It's no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then, and it's a poor sort of memory that only works backward.
