Starship Modification

I was just wondering if this had ever come up, or if there is any lore in the game that stops this from happening.

Say you have a carrier, it can carry up to 2 Hulks in its ship hanger bays (if I remember this right). Could a capsuleer have modified their carrier, ripped out the vital components from a Hulk and mine from the carrier instead?

I'll admit I got this idea when wondering to what lengths a Titan could be modified to devour Ore, but the carrier approach would be a cheap hack to mine in deep space, perhaps even ORE itself with that tasty Noxium asteroid...

Wouldn't it just be a carrier with mining turrets? What do you mean by 'vital parts'?

Yes, though with Strip Miners. Just an idle thought, but if the critical systems are smaller than a Hulk, and 2 Hulks fit in a carrier then it stands to reason you could remove the specialised computers, power plants and network them into a carriers hull.
Bingo, now a Carrier has 6 strip miner turrets and can jump away at the first sighn of trouble.

Its like an extension of the old trick with carrying full industrial ships in the ship hanger for logistics before this was nerfed by CCP.

Actually, there's an interesting piece of EVE backstory regarding this.

The first ever Chimera class carrier hull was actually a water freighter that held the callsign "Kairiola". It was requisitioned during the first Caldari/Gallente war and refitted to be a fighter carrier.

The design was so successful that it is still used as the blueprint for modern day Chimera class carriers to this day, over 100 years later, although with a few refinements and technological upgrades obviously.

The Kairiola itself became famous in Caldari history when Admiral Yakiya Tovil-Toba ordered all non-essential personnel to abandon ship, and flew the vessel directly into the atmosphere of Gallente Prime during the siege of the neighboring Caldari homeworld, Caldari Prime.

It broke apart on re-entry, and a large section of what was left struck the Federal city of Hueromont, killing over two million people. This marked the culmination of over a week of concentrated effort to divert Gallente attention from Caldari Prime, and ended up being enough of a distraction to the Gallente Military, that the Caldari were able to evacuate their remaining people from their besieged homeworld and make their escape.

To this day, Admiral Yakiya Tovil-Toba is revered as a national hero to the Caldari people for his sacrifice, and his name is traditionally the first phrase that every Caldari child learns to say.

TL;DR - Yes, there's been instances of ships being refitted for different purposes in EVE's backstory P

In my opinion, this is one of the best player created videos ever made, so well edited and the ending always hits me in the chest.

Very atmospheric. Cool

Speaking of the day of darkness videos, ive seen the second one, but where is the first? :/

But if i were to retrofit a ship in eve, it would have to be a mining barge with guns on it. I mean, wouldnt it be a nasty suprise if i were mining in a skiff, a ganker come in, and i shoot artillery completely alpha'ing him? That would be a fun day indeed.

It's in the same channel, here, see?

Oh, and some people say they have been using exhumers as bait/combat ships succesfully, not sure what fit they used, but I'm guessing it involved drones.
