Drone loss and replacement is a definite problem. Especially for Gallente hulls, since CCP in all their genius decided that Gallente should only have room to carry 1-2 flights, while Amarr can carry 3.

It's part of differentiating the races, Amarr have less bandwidth and more space while Gallente have more bandwidth and less space.

And they both suck! Big smile

Amarr drone boats often die without all of their drones having seen the light of day (been deployed).

Gallente run into logistics issues of maintaining combat viability in face of drone loss (due to warpouts, smartbombs, direct damage).

In either case, the idea is flawed at the core. Kinda like the whole hybrids/drones split weapon system all Gallente drone boats seem to have that someone at CCP just fell in love with for some reason and won't let go of.

What?

-If a drone boat dies before being able to utilize or even drop drones then it must have been called primary by an alpha fleet or a fleet that massively outnumbers yours, in either case no amount of drones would have saved it. That said, the Amarr drone boats are very viable ships for their respective purposes.

-So keep spare drones handy? It's not that hard, and drone loss is rarely a problem unless you are operating far from your home base (so you should have some foresight and carry spares). The vast majority of PVPers don't carry smartbombs, direct damage to drones is only a consideration in small gang engagements where you should be able to micro them anyway, and if you see that you will need to warp out, pull in your drones.

See... you bring up some good points... but here is my counter...

Most "real" drone boats like the Vexor and Myrmidon are geared for "brawling" and will usually be in a situation where they will not be able to escape... as brawlers typically engage at sub 10km ranges. Lost drones are hardly a concern when you are fighting for your life. It is this "brawler" aspect that makes these ships unpopular... not the drones themselves.

And I speak as someone use uses drone boats every chance he gets. And I have RARELY ever left a drone behind.

Fake edit: and for those situations where you are waiting for an engagement to come to you... and you are given the call to bail... and you drones are already deployed and at range... don't do that. Wait until you are sure that the engagement is going to happen in the first place BEFORE deploying drones.
Yes... you may miss out on the odd quick gank... but that's not what drone boats are good for. It's long term slugouts where they shine.

Drone boats are the best boats in Eve for blobby ganks.

This is pretty much indisputable as we can assist a Hyena with 254 sets of 5x Garde II's.

That's something like 150k (conservatively, could be more like 180k honestly) dps on one target instantaneously.

What other weapon system can gank like this?

LOL

I can totally see this being used in null-sec. In low-sec... where the gate guns hate drones... not so much. I will say though that they make for great decoys when going GCC.

A proper pilot can scoop sentry drones to manage gate gun aggro. The sentry drones don't move, so they're conveniently located next to your ship for just this reason.

Gate guns do not stop this method. They cycle targets every 30 seconds.

In 30 seconds you can do 4.5M damage with this setup.

Any old Dominix can apply over 1250 dps with 6x Ions and Garde II's.

It can also carry three full flights of Garde II's.

Tell me more about this failed split-weapon platform.

And when was the last time you saw such Dominix used in PvP?

Just for fun, I went through a dozen pages of EVE Kill. I saw Ravens and Scorpions, I saw a Tempest, a Maelstrom and a Megathron. I even saw a Nightmare and a Machariel. Did not see a Domi. Not a single one.

And that is why it's a failed split-weapon platform. Just because it does 1300 DPS on paper, doesn't mean you'll get that DPS in combat.

Try some in-game experimentation before dismissing it altogether?

Talk about doing all your theorycraft "on-paper!"
