See bolded part. The concept of alignment needs clarification here.

Most people consider a ship to be 'aligned' when it is travelling at least 3/4 full speed in a fixed direction towards a warpable object/bookmark, i.e. ready to instawarp.

You have to be aware that when your ship is still, you are not aligned to anything. Where your ship is pointing when it is sitting still has no effect on align time to anything in any direction. The EVE server does not model ship orientation, it keeps track of the direction vector when moving. The orientation of your ship is just graphically modelled locally in your client and has no effect on gameplay.

So when you jump in to a system and have gate cloak, you are not aligned to anything. The instant you move, you should turn your hardeners on. Its a good habit to do at all times.
