Hi everyone,

Before the new graphics update made my PC scream for better impants ;) i played one character to just after tutorials and during playthrough one of my STEAM buddies gave me 5 mil. Right now I'm with a new PC and decided to resubscribe. I started a new character - to experience the new tutorial and for small warmup - and split the money between the two, I might later decide which character to play.

My question is - I would like to play sort of bounty hunter/explorer/scientific mix and what sort of help can this 5mil/2x2.5mil be?
I mean what are the best routes to pursue my character goals?

Personally, I would use that money to buy some starting skillbooks and frigs and go out and play.

Explorer needs the probing skills, salvaging, hacking, archaeology and of course pew pew skills
Scientific needs the science skills.

Exploration is "fun" (if there is such a thing in regards to PVE), it's not as grindy, makes great isk and it teaches you lots of funky/cool/interesting stuff. Assuming you fly Gallente ship get yourself into an imicus with some drones, a core probe launcher and a codebreaker. Do the exploration tutorials and check youtube for guides on it. Keep the money for now, you could spend it on cheapo implants but fairly soon you'd replace them anyway as you'll have more money.

Newbies can make 10s of millions of isk daily doing low SP exploration just fine, just realise that getting into exploration is uhm... annoying as it requires you to get your thinking cap on. Also, income is erratic and depends on... luck and your efficiency.

Fit it kinda like this:

[Imicus, Explorer Newbie]
Small Armor Repairer I
Capacitor Power Relay I

1MN Afterburner I
Codebreaker I

[empty high slot]
Core Probe Launcher I, Core Scanner Probe I

Small Gravity Capacitor Upgrade I
Small Gravity Capacitor Upgrade I
[empty rig slot]

The golden rule is, don't fly something you can't afford to lose. 5 mil will get you a destroyer, and give you a good buffer to replace it in case it blows up. You'll probably find that you spend a lot on skills at first, too. This is what I'd advise you spend it on, rather than blowing it on shiny things.

I have Imicus on my first character so thats one thing done, and yeah, I remember from tutorials that 3D probe scanning gave me a bit of a head scratch which made me like this game even more.

Any advice on good starting skill books?

5 million isk, is really nothing in terms of money. About your profession, you should stick to one thing only per character, or you are going to be training skills for the rest of your life. It takes 21 years to learn all skills, so make one character for Scientific studies, one for bounty hunter and explorer. This way you get best of both worlds.. With that 5 mil buy an implant.

I'd add some weapon to draw aggression to keep the drones alive. It's even more important with the new expansion and the AI upgrades. The Imicus is also getting changed. You will propably upgrade to a cruiser before that, but in case you don't, this is what the new buffed Imicus will look like.

Quote:
Imicus:
Frigate skill bonuses:
7.5% increase to scan strength of probes
5% bonus to Codebreaker, Analyzer and Salvager cycle time

Slot layout: 3 H (+1), 4 M (+2), 3 L (+1), 1 turrets (-1)
Fittings: 21 PWG (+1), 250 CPU (+20)
Defense (shields / armor / hull) : 275(+50) / 325(-19) / 275(-14)
Capacitor (amount / recharge rate / cap per second): 270 (+113.75)/ 135s (+32.8s)/ 1.8 (+0.47)
Mobility (max velocity / agility / mass / align time): 330 (+52) / 4.15 (-0.04) / 997000 / 3.87s (+0.04s)
Drones (bandwidth / bay): 20(+5) / 40(+25)
Targeting (max targeting range / Scan Resolution / Max Locked targets): 35km / 450 / 4
Sensor strength: 11 Magnetometric
Signature radius: 41 (-4)
Cargo capacity: 400 (+80)

Confirming you might want to use a gun on your ship.

Specially with new AI that switches aggro (if they are similar to current "Smart" AI's - fit a remote repper to repair drones, AI hates those).

Buy an Incursus or two, and go out and try to kill other players. PvP is the only worthwhile activity in this game. Try and find victims who are fairly young in the game at first, if you want to improve your odds of success. If you lose your 5 mil, just run a couple missions or something to make it back, then get out and try and kill more people.

Very poor advice in my oppinion. What constitutes a lot of money is relative to the person and the situation. In a situation where it can buy you two fully fitted ship appropriate for your skill level, 5 mil is a lot. Your 10 Billion is also nothing "in terms of money" purely because "in terms of money" means nothing in this situation :)

Dont spend ALL your money on implants, you will lose them and be upset.

Do train characters for more than one thing as it increases imersion and makes you more versatile. Just be clever about which skills you group together in a character. Just think if you want to do 7 different things in the game you would need 3 accounts (3 characters per account). My character can do all kinds of things well, has been training solid for over 2 years and is still very cheap to re-clone. Also since you can only train one character at a time per account and all careers need core skills, you are actually increasing training time by spreading training amongst all 3 chars on the account. What you meant to say was "train 1 thing per character because it keeps your clone prices and travel times down" which still makes no noticable difference until 50mil SP plus.

EDIT : If OP wants a stab at PvP i'll pay for some ships, get in touch.

I'd say concentrate on one character; if you're not sure you want to play the game, there's no sense in paying 2 subscriptions.

As for what to do with the money, my advice would be to get skills, but don't blow all of it. 5 mil is not a big sum. And new characters have the problem that they are prevented from doing a lot of things by the absence of skills.

There's a slew of support skills under the Electronics, Engineering, Navigation, Mechanic categories that cost 30k-100k and just training them to 1 or 2 will suddenly let you fit most of the modules in the game, so you can actually try different things, fit out a frigate and actually experience the game. Kinda sucks to not be able to put in shields, armor, afterburners, cargo expanders, etc etc just cause you don't have the skills.

All pilots will need a lot of the support skills, and then you specialize on a ship lineup and advanced skills once you kinda figure out what you'd like to do.

Don't give in to the blue balls' pandering. Join Red. There are lots of wealthy pilots over there that will just hand you 10mil worth of fitted ships to go splode
