It's actually been used for a long time to prevent warping as a rudimentary form of tackling when you don't have a point, or don't have sufficient disruption strength to keep someone pinned.
Fine in 0.0 and low-sec, but in hi-sec it is circumventing CONCORD blowing you up when you "point" someone like this.

Fun fact: no it isn't

Fun fact:

When you point someone with a module in hi-sec you blow up.

When you "point" someone with a bump, you don't.

Now I am fine with bumping ships in hi-sec and I think CCPs general stance on not considering it griefing is fine.

However, when CCP Falcon starts blurring the picture by using the "point" argument it is opening a can of worms. There is no game mechanic in 0.0 or low-sec that spawns CONCORD if you point someone with a module, thus, nothing is being circumvented.

That is not the case in hi-sec tho. So while bumping someone out of range of an asteroid field would seem perfectly within the rules of the game, using it to "point" someone instead of using a module, is not.

That's my issue, CCP Falcon is taking a general response by the GM team that came from the "miner bumping" issue and widening its application by talking about "cheap mans point" and even brings in the war mechanics as an argument, allowing everybody to latch onto it and use it as a catch-all for every scenario involving bumping.

No talk about how people who use this to "point" people in hi-sec should use the war mechanic and declare war on their target, so they can point them.

Do I think they should change bumping? No, it's a valid mechanic to achieve certain things.

Do I think they should look at the scenarios were it is being used to circumvent game mechanics, like the need to declare war on your target so you can point them without CONCORD interference, or being able to "point" a neutral in hi-sec without getting concordokken? Yes.

This means that if I start bumping freighters until they pay up X millions, its legit?

What if I'm in an NPC corp, as ransoming makes bumping legit?

Time to start shining my BS.

The sad part of this entire debate is that the game is so dull in hisec and the entrance to something greater in Null and WH so steep that people pay a sub to engage in absolutely trivial activities.

Bumping freighters is the new thing to do ladies and gentlemen! Though my guess would be that it will be hard to get ISK from auto-piloting AFK freighter pilots.

Put a scanner on and get them to pay 10%+ of what they carry pending on the amount of traffic the system gets.

Play EvE how you want to play it and do not let others dictate how you play. Evolve your playstyle to protect yourself from others! Even in "PVE", "PVP" is there, lurking in the shadows.

My only point is none of this makes sense. What would make sense is if you bump me, using what CCP admits is a combat maneuver, you are now flagged and I have the opportunity to return the aggression in kind.

And every time you hit undock there will be a wall of instalocking tornados waiting for a bump and free aggression flag.

Stopping in front of people on autopilot approaching gates would be my 1st thought if this was ever implemented.

Sitting a rookie ship right next to mining ships and getting in their way and stopping waiting for a bump would be common.

Be careful what you wish for - aggression flags for bumping would be a dream for griefers.

So you say bumping is a form of aggression and has been used as a combat move in the past.

Great, I don't afk mine but when I do mine there is always some idiot that tries bumping me that I have to avoid. Please do me the favor of flagging the aggressor and let me take care of things through the leet PvP this game is supposed to offer. Thank you.

It's a little weird, that bumping in hisec can affect someone in a hostile fashion but doesn't cause any aggression.

But what you're asking for is ill-defined. You don't specifically define what the game code will use to determine which one is the aggressor. However it does define it, will be exploited to give slower industrial ships aggression, by putting fast ships in front of them and stopping them there. If this were an easily solved problem, CCP would have already fixed it.

You could.

You simply make ship bumping do nothing unless the target is locked, then you make it an aggressive act which attracts the appropriate crimewatch status.

Bumping as a combat maneuver is untouched (who fights unlocked...?). Deliberate bumping is valid as a tactic, only it then it would have a decent consequence.

And Jita 4-4 undock stays just fine.

Well the ship doing the bumping does, obviously.

Then, per my post - no bump occurs. Disable the ship collision unless there's a lock had by either party.

It means people using it as a 'poor mans point' are unaffected (since presumably there's a lock for the weapons here) and people extorting with it are liable for aggression mechanics.

The only 'problem' with bumping is it doesnt flag aggression as it ideally should and solutions are difficult. The idea I suggested here mitigates most problems on all sides that I can think of - legitimate combat use, undock issues & target baiting.

Happy to be corrected.

9 pages based in the fact that some people can't deal with other people colliding with them in a video game. Now all we need to make General Discussion truly Epic is a thread on how people being too noisy walking around their captain's quarters should spawn CONCORD.

And high-sec miners wonder why they are always getting screwed with.

Noted, and considered...

Highsec is owned by players now. Systems 0.5-1.0 are New Order Territory. All miners and other residents of Highsec must obey The Code. Mining without a permit is dangerous and harmful to the EVE community. See www.MinerBumping.com

I believe at this point, the topic has run its course. Too many posts are little more than people insulting one another and trolling, with little in the way of constructive content.

I am therefore locking this thread which bears my name in vain.
