Eve is running... with 1.7 frames per second... Ideas? (also noticed some strange stuff)

Hi

I finally got EVE working using a hint of a corpmate. Installing the game never worked for me, but copying the game directory from the windows drive into the .wine/... folder did the trick.

After starting the game I had to wait about 20-30 minutes until the EULA was loaded. After that I lowered all the graphic setting which also took ages. Ever click was recognized about 10 seconds later.

Anyway, got the game running (all setting to low/off and in window-mode with 1064x903).
Strangely my videocard is not recognized, there is some other card shown in the menu. I tried what is suggested here, but after that the game would not start anymore.

I am sitting in a Station, and with only chat and the station menu on I get 1.7 frames per second. If I open Inventory and Market I get 0.8 FPS.
This error message keeps reappearing in the terminal at the FPS-rate. So everytime the screen is reloading. (Sometimes the first line skips a few frames)

I got mesa 8.x installed and am running Linux Mint on a AMD 64bit CPU, videocard is Radeon HD 4760.

Now to the strange part, which probably has nothing to do with my problem... but is funny :)

If I minimize or close all the windows (still sitting in a station) and tehn press ctrl+f to get the FPS menu suddenly the right half of the screen gets grey and my FPS go up to about 15, but the texxt in the FPS-window won't show, just the curve... When I close it again everything returns to normal. I added that in the pastebin.

Any Ideas how I could get my FPS to something acceptable? I really only need enough for station trading and mining for semi-afk isk-making. For real gameplay I can boot windows...

You will need to provide more information about your setup.

What wine version are you using? Ideally you should use one of the latest wine versions.
What drivers are you using?

You should also properly install the game instead of just copying the folder from windows. Does EVE also run fine on windows (I'm assuming you have windows installed)?

Here is a rough guide how to install the game in wine.

Try not to use window- but full-screen mode.
Window-mode was damn slow for me (radeon too).

Sorry it took me so long to reply...

@ Globulin Kaundur: it got me about 0,1 FPS... also it defeats the purpose of running Eve on Linux, I want to do that so I can get work done while mining (which I cannot on windows).

@ Nebu Retski: I knew it, an Archlinux user :)
I am using:

  • Mesa 8.x
  • Wine 1.5.5
  • Gallium 0.4 on AMD RV730

Do you need something else?

About the installing thing: I had trouble installing the game for several weeks. something was wrong every time (I even wrote in some other posts in this forum). Copying the file from the windows drive was what made Eve to start the first time on linux.

Check that you aren't running an external web browser -- that caused the same issue for me.

:EDIT: Never mind, I diudn't test it thoroughly enough. I got nothin'.

hmm, I always got as browser running... wouldn't have thought that troubled the performance that much... I'll try it later

What about trying the ATI blob? I'm an nvidia user, but probably you could at least try native graphic drivers...

You mean the proprietary ATI drivers? They do not work at all....

See, that is your problem right there. Make fglrx work and you will see a vast improvement. It should be fairly easy to get going currently in Arch as current kernel and xorg are supported.

Not using Arch, got Linux Mint (Ubuntu) running here. But I will look into it... Problem is, when I start the proprietary drivers everything is full of glitches (the normal desktop) with coloured pixels everywhere and stuff like that...

Try to join the "Linux" or "Fluxbox" Channel in EvE. I saw someone with the same problem. They had fix this problem :)

ati video drivers under nix are pretty fn horrible. if amd seriously wants to provide vendor drivers they need to get more then 1 person working on it. (i dont know how many they have but i swear its some basement dude working on them lol). TBH nvidia is the way to go as far as nix and video goes.

as far as your graphics issue make sure that its loading flgx driver for your ati based card should see a huge increase in fps.

radeon driver is not for EVE atm, sorry.

Next, what is your DE? Tried switching to a lightweight DE?

Describe your problem with the blob.
